**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was engulfed in anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding what awaited me. I was about to commence my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been rather timid and introverted, plunging into such a fresh and demanding environment felt daunting. Reflecting back now, I recognize an academic year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of happiness. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting challenges I encountered at the onset of university was the process of making friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you might be sharing similar concerns. On my first day of moving into my accommodation—just a few days ahead of the official start of term—I spent the entire day retreating in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself.

Fast forward to now, and I can proudly assert that I’ve developed some of the most remarkable friendships of my life. Here at Imperial, and within my program, I’ve discovered a second family. All it required was a little small talk with individuals who were equally apprehensive.

What’s the major lesson I’ve taken away? Embrace the challenge at the beginning of the year. Even if you don’t feel prepared or at ease, there will be numerous icebreaker activities and chances to connect with others. And above all, just be yourself. With such a diverse community within the university, you’re bound to discover those who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Addressing the Academic Demands

Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the enhanced difficulty of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more formidable. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or doubt your skills when observing others studying and questioning if you’re lagging behind.

What assisted me in maneuvering through this? Reminding myself that we’re all in this together. If something is unclear to you, it’s likely others might be struggling too. The crucial thing is to seek assistance. This might be the single most valuable skill to hone in your first year—reach out to your peers and the faculty when you require guidance.

### The Importance of Supportive Faculty

Speaking of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is outstanding. The instructors and tutors are genuinely invested in student success and understand the hurdles we encounter. They foster open communication throughout the academic year and are always ready to assist.

I didn’t make full use of the pastoral support offered until the concluding part of the year, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. Early in the year, I took the initiative to become a year well-being representative. This position helped me cultivate connections with staff members, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My suggestion? Fully leverage the support structures available to you—you can never have an excess of help!

### Insights Gained

As I look back on my first year, I’ve come to realize that much of the anxiety I experienced—both ahead of starting university and during the year—was often unwarranted. There are abundant support resources from both faculty and fellow students to help you navigate through difficulties.

This year has taught me that I am never alone, even on overwhelming days. It’s shown me how to balance exam pressure and deadlines with moments of fun and enjoyment. Most critically, it has been a year of personal development, and I’m eager to see what unfolds next.
