**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and doubt about what was to come. I was on the cusp of beginning my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been introverted and quiet, plunging into this new phase felt intimidating. Now, looking back, I recognize a year abundant in growth, challenges, and endless joyful experiences. But what insights have I gained from this journey, and where do I find myself today?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Building Friendships
One of the most daunting obstacles I faced was forming friendships. Beginning university can be quite overwhelming, and if you’re a future student reading this, it’s probably one of your main sources of anxiety. On my first day in student housing, just days before the semester commenced, I spent an entire day secluded in my room, too apprehensive to step outside and meet others.
Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve forged some of the deepest friendships I’ve ever had—friends who feel like family. It all kicked off with casual conversations with individuals who were just as new and uncertain as I was.
So, what have I taken away from this? I learned that making the leap at the beginning of the year is always worthwhile. If you’re not feeling prepared or comfortable right away, that’s perfectly fine! Universities provide numerous icebreaker events and activities to facilitate connections with others. Most importantly, I found that staying true to yourself is essential. In such a varied student community, you’re sure to encounter others who share your interests and values.
### Navigating Academic Difficulties
Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the intricacies of the course content. The transition from A-levels to university was apparent, and shifting from the first term to the second felt even more intense. It’s easy to feel swamped or question your capabilities when you observe others studying and appearing to have everything together.
What supported me through these times was the realization that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re finding it hard to grasp something, it’s likely that others are as well. The key lesson I learned in my first year was the importance of seeking assistance. Whether it’s from classmates or teaching staff, reaching out for help is crucial.
### Cultivating Connections with Faculty
On the subject of staff, the Materials Science department at Imperial is exceptional. The lecturers and tutors genuinely desire for students to thrive and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. They keep lines of communication open throughout the year, addressing student issues and providing support.
Although I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support options available until late in the year, I wish I had sought it out earlier. Early on, I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative, which enabled me to forge relationships with staff members. This turned out to be one of the most fulfilling elements of my year. There are numerous opportunities to connect with staff, and doing so can dramatically enhance your university experience. My biggest takeaway? Make the most of the support available to you—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on the year, I’ve learned that the apprehension I experienced before starting university—and even during the year—was often unwarranted. With the abundant support from both staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. I’ve figured out how to manage the stress of exams and deadlines while also carving out time for enjoyment and fun.
This first year has been a path of personal development, filled with lessons that I will carry forward throughout my time at Imperial and beyond.
