**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and doubt regarding the path ahead. I was on the verge of beginning my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been somewhat introverted, taking the plunge felt like stepping far outside my comfort zone. Now, reflecting on an academic year filled with advancement, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment, I recognize how much I’ve evolved and how far I’ve traveled.
### Taking the Leap: Forming Connections
One of the most daunting tasks I encountered was forming friendships. Starting university can be quite intimidating, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, you might be feeling the same concerns. I recall moving into my accommodation a few days before classes started and spending an entire day isolated in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself.
Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly claim that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships of my life. The individuals I’ve met here—both within my course and throughout the university—have turned into a second family for me. How did this happen? It all began with small steps, like engaging in casual conversations with others who were equally new and apprehensive.
What I’ve discovered is this: make that leap early on. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be numerous ice-breaker events and chances to connect with others. And above all, stay true to yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re certain to find people who resonate with your interests and values.
### Adjusting to the Academic Shift
Another major obstacle was adapting to the increased workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was substantial, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s all too easy to feel swamped or doubt your capabilities when you see others studying effortlessly.
What assisted me was the realization that everyone is in the same situation. If you’re finding something challenging, likely, others are too. The essential point is to reach out for help—whether from fellow students or faculty. This is perhaps the most crucial lesson I learned during my first year: don’t hesitate to seek assistance.
### Assistance from Staff
On the topic of support, the staff in the Materials department are remarkable. They sincerely wish for students to thrive and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept communication lines open and were always eager to address our concerns.
Although I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support offered until the latter part of the year, I regret not doing so earlier. One of the best choices I made was to become a year well-being representative. This position helped me establish strong connections with staff members, which turned out to be invaluable. Whether through formal positions or informal encounters, getting to know the staff is one of the best steps you can take for yourself. My recommendation? Fully embrace the support available—you can never have too much assistance.
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on the year, I’ve realized that the nervousness I experienced before starting university—and even throughout the year—was frequently misplaced. With the ample support from both staff and peers, I was never genuinely alone. I have learned to juggle exam stress and deadlines with moments of happiness and enjoyment, and I’ve developed in ways I never anticipated.
As I continue on my path, I am appreciative of the challenges, the friendships, and the lessons that have defined my first year at Imperial. To anyone gearing up to begin their own journey, keep in mind: take the plunge, seek help, and enjoy the experience.
