**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, apprehension, and doubt as I geared up to start my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). As someone who had always been quite introverted, taking the plunge into this new phase of life felt daunting. Now, as I reflect on an academic year brimming with growth, obstacles, and a fair share of enjoyment, I can contemplate the insights I’ve gained and how much I’ve progressed.
### Confronting the Initial Major Challenge: Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting parts of beginning university was the thought of forging new friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this may resonate with your own concerns. I recall spending my first day in student housing, secluded in my room, too anxious to venture out and greet anyone. Fast forward to the present, and I am pleased to report that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life.
These connections didn’t develop instantly, but they kicked off with small exchanges—like engaging in casual conversations with others who were equally new and apprehensive. Gradually, I discovered a chosen family here at Imperial, especially within my program. What I’ve come to understand is that taking that first bold step, despite the fear it may invoke, is truly worthwhile. If you’re not prepared at the outset, don’t stress—there will be an abundance of icebreaker activities and chances to interact with others. Above all, be yourself. With the rich diversity at Imperial, you’re sure to meet individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Managing the Academic Shift
Another significant challenge was adapting to the increased workload and complexity of the course material. The leap from A-levels to university was palpable, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more strenuous. It’s easy to feel daunted or question your capabilities when surrounded by high-achieving peers.
What assisted me in overcoming this was the understanding that I wasn’t isolated in my feelings. Everyone was going through a similar experience, and if I was struggling with a concept, the likelihood was that others were as well. The crucial takeaway? Don’t hold back from seeking help. Whether you reach out to classmates or teaching staff, asking for assistance can significantly impact your journey.
### Assistance from the Staff
Speaking of staff, the Materials department at Imperial is remarkable. The educators and mentors are sincerely invested in student success and show understanding of the hurdles we encounter. They foster open communication throughout the year, addressing student issues and providing support.
Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support offered until the year’s end, I regret not doing so sooner. One of my finest decisions was becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to cultivate relationships with staff members, which turned out to be invaluable. Whether through formal roles or casual encounters, getting acquainted with your lecturers and tutors is one of the most beneficial steps you can take for yourself. My recommendation? Make the most of the help and resources at your disposal—you can never have too much support!
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on my inaugural year, I’ve come to realize that much of the anxiety I experienced before university was unwarranted. There’s a wealth of support available, both from the faculty and fellow students, to guide you through this new chapter. I’ve learned that I’m never truly solitary, and I’ve figured out how to balance the demands of exams and deadlines with moments of enjoyment and laughter.
This year has been a transformative journey, and I’m eager to see what lies ahead. If you’re on the brink of your university journey, remember that it’s completely normal to feel apprehensive—but also be assured that you’ll find your path, forge meaningful relationships, and excel in ways you never anticipated.
