**Reflections on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and ambiguity regarding what was to come. I was on the brink of commencing my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As a person who had typically been quite introverted, entering into this new realm felt quite daunting. Reflecting back, I can recognize the significant growth I’ve experienced over this past academic year—one filled with obstacles, personal development, and a lot of enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained, and how have I progressed today?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Friend-Making
One of the biggest challenges I encountered when starting university was the pursuit of friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you might relate to that concern. On my first day in student housing, mere days before the term started, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too fearful to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can confidently state that I’ve formed some of the most amazing friendships of my life—friends who have become like a second family to me.
How did that transformation occur? It began with simple actions, such as engaging in light conversations with those who were equally anxious. I discovered that taking that initial leap of faith at the year’s onset is essential. If you’re not quite ready immediately, don’t fret—there will be a multitude of social events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, I found that authenticity is vital. With such a varied community at Imperial, you are sure to discover individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another notable challenge was adapting to the academic workload and the complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was apparent, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more significant. It’s easy to feel inundated and question your capabilities when observing peers who seem to be thriving academically.
What assisted me during this time was the awareness that everyone is facing similar struggles. If you find yourself grappling with a concept, there’s a good chance others are struggling too. My best advice is to reach out for assistance—whether it’s from fellow students or faculty members. Learning to ask for help is arguably the most crucial skill to cultivate in your first year.
### Assistance from the Materials Department
Speaking of support, the personnel within the Materials department are truly outstanding. They earnestly desire for students to flourish and demonstrate understanding towards the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept the lines of communication open and provided unwavering support. Although I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support resources until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of them sooner.
At the beginning of the year, I took a proactive step by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position allowed me to forge connections with staff members, which proved to be extremely beneficial. There are numerous pathways to engage with staff, and I wholeheartedly suggest making the most of these opportunities. My most significant takeaway? Don’t hesitate to utilize the resources and support systems available to you—you can never have an excess of help.
### Insights Gained
In retrospect, I’ve recognized that the apprehension I experienced—both before and during my university journey—was frequently unwarranted. With the extensive range of support provided by staff and fellow students, those anxieties became manageable. This year has taught me that I’m never really alone and that finding joy in the university experience is achievable, even amidst the pressures of exams and due dates.
As I progress, I am thankful for the experiences and insights that have molded me. To anyone on the verge of starting their own university venture: take that leap, embrace your true self, and don’t shy away from seeking help. You are capable of succeeding!
