**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nervousness, fear, and uncertainty about the upcoming journey. I was on the verge of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Having always been rather shy and introverted, the prospect of jumping into this new chapter was intimidating. Now, in hindsight, it’s clear that this past academic year has been filled with significant personal development, hurdles, and plenty of enjoyable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself now?
### Building Friendships: The Primary Challenge
One of the most daunting elements of beginning university was the task of making friends. If you’re an incoming student perusing this, it’s likely a concern for you as well. On my inaugural day moving into my residence, I spent the whole time sequestered in my room, too timid to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to today, and I can affirm that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. At Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, and it all began with simple conversations with peers who were experiencing similar feelings.
So, what did I take away from this? I discovered that taking initiative at the beginning of the year is invariably worthwhile. Even if you feel unprepared or uneasy, fret not—there will be an abundance of ice-breaking activities and occasions to interact with others. Most importantly, I realized that authenticity is paramount. With such a diverse group of people in the course and the university, you’re certain to encounter those who share your passions and principles.
### Confronting the Workload and Academic Trials
Another significant challenge was acclimating to the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a noticeable leap from A-levels, and the transition from the first to the second term was even greater. It’s easy to feel daunted in such a setting, particularly when observing others studying and beginning to doubt your own capabilities. However, here’s what assisted me: the understanding that everyone is navigating the same journey. If you find something difficult to grasp, it’s likely others are grappling with it too. The best course of action is to seek help—whether from classmates or instructors. In my view, honing the ability to ask for assistance is the most crucial skill to cultivate during your first year.
### Assistance from the Faculty
On that note about faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is exceptional. The professors and support personnel genuinely wish for your success, and they recognize the hurdles students encounter. They maintain ongoing dialogue with us throughout the academic year, addressing our inquiries and providing support. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support available until late in the year, but I wish I’d taken advantage of it sooner.
At the year’s outset, I did take a bold step by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This role enabled me to familiarize myself with the faculty, which has been incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with the staff, and I highly encourage doing so. My most significant takeaway from this experience is to fully leverage the support that’s offered. You can never have too much help!
### Concluding Thoughts
All in all, this year has illustrated that the anxiety I felt prior to and during university was mostly unwarranted. With the diverse support network from both faculty and fellow students, those feelings of apprehension can be alleviated. I’ve learned that I’m never truly solitary, and I’ve discovered the ability to find enjoyment even amidst the stress of exams and deadlines.
