**Insights from My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about the path ahead. I was on the verge of beginning my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been introverted and quiet, plunging into this new experience was not exactly within my comfort zone. Now, reflecting on the past academic year, I recognize it as a time rich in development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Building Friendships

One of the most intimidating challenges I encountered early in my journey was the task of making new friends. If you are a prospective student perusing this, it’s likely something that weighs on your mind as well. On my first day moving into my accommodations, a few days ahead of the official term start, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too scared to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of my closest friendships. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, all of which commenced with a few straightforward conversations with individuals who were experiencing similar feelings.

So, what was my revelation? I discovered that taking that first step is invariably worthwhile. Even if you don’t feel prepared or at ease, there will be an abundance of ice-breaker events and chances to meet new people. Most crucially, I learned that being authentic truly matters. With such a diverse group of individuals in the course and university, you will undoubtedly find those who connect with you.

### Navigating the Academic Demands

Another significant challenge I confronted was adapting to the workload and the escalated complexity of the course material. There was certainly a marked increase from A-level studies, and the transition from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. Being thrust into such an intense academic setting can occasionally impact your self-esteem. You may observe your peers studying and feel inadequate.

What aided me during this time was recognizing that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you encounter a concept that eludes you, it’s likely that others are grappling with it too. The most vital lesson I absorbed in my first year was the importance of seeking assistance. Whether it comes from fellow students or faculty, don’t hesitate to reach out.

### Assistance from the Faculty

On the topic of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is outstanding. The lecturers and support personnel truly desire for you to thrive and comprehend the challenges faced by students. They maintain open lines of communication with us throughout the academic year, addressing any concerns we may have. I didn’t fully engage with the support available until the year’s end, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier.

At the year’s inception, I made the bold choice to become a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to build relationships with the staff, which has proven invaluable. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and it is one of the best actions you can take for your personal development. My key takeaway from this experience is to make the most of the support offered. You can never receive too much help!

### Concluding Remarks

In summary, this year has revealed to me that the apprehension I felt before and during university was largely unsubstantiated. An abundance of support systems exists, from faculty to fellow students, ensuring that you are never truly solitary. I’ve learned to strike a balance between enjoying my time and managing the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.
