### Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I experienced a mix of nerves, anxiety, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been quiet and reserved, taking the plunge into this new chapter felt overwhelming. Now, reflecting on that time, I recognize a year brimming with growth, hurdles, and unforgettable moments. But what insights have I gained from this experience, and what is my current perspective?
#### Conquering the Fear of Friendships
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. If you’re a prospective student reading this, it’s likely a concern for you as well. On my initial day in student housing, just days before the semester commenced, I spent the whole day tucked away in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve made some of the most wonderful friends I’ve ever known.
The pivotal moment arrived when I chose to step outside of my comfort zone and engage in casual conversations with others who were equally apprehensive. Gradually, I discovered a second family here at Imperial, both within my program and throughout the university. My most important lesson? Take a bold step at the beginning of the year. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous ice-breaking events and chances to connect with others. Most significantly, just be yourself. With such a wide array of diverse individuals at university, you’re certain to find friends who align with your interests and values.
#### Addressing the Academic Adjustment
Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels to university was significant, and the transition from the first term to the second proved to be even tougher. It’s easy to feel inundated or doubt your capabilities when observing others who appear to be studying successfully.
What supported me was the awareness that everyone shares similar struggles. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, it’s likely that your peers are facing the same issue. The crucial step is to seek assistance—whether it’s from fellow students or the academic staff. Learning to request help is possibly the most crucial skill you can cultivate in your first year.
#### The Value of Supportive Educators
Speaking of support, the staff in the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely care about student success and are compassionate toward the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept open communication channels to address our concerns.
Although I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had engaged with it earlier. At the beginning, I took a significant step by becoming a year well-being representative, a position that enabled me to cultivate relationships with staff members. This turned out to be an invaluable opportunity. There are various ways to connect with staff, and doing so can greatly enhance your university experience. My recommendation? Make the most of the support systems at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance!
#### Insights from My First Year
In hindsight, this past year has taught me that the anxiety I felt—both before and during university—was mostly misguided. With the abundance of support provided by staff and fellow students, I was never truly isolated. I’ve learned how to balance the stress of exams and deadlines with enjoyable and carefree moments.
Ultimately, my initial year at Imperial has been a journey of self-discovery, development, and connection. If you’re about to embark on your own university journey, know that it’s perfectly normal to feel apprehensive. Take that plunge, embrace the challenges, and don’t hesitate to rely on the support that surrounds you.
