**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Just ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with a mix of excitement and nerves as I prepared to embark on my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). As an inherently shy and introverted person, stepping into the unknown was a daunting experience. Now, reflecting on a year of progress, challenges, and memorable experiences, I can wholeheartedly assert that it has been a life-changing journey. So, what have I taken away from this year, and where do I stand now?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Connections
One of the most intimidating challenges I encountered at the beginning of university was forming friendships. If you’re an upcoming student reading this, you might be feeling similar trepidations. On my first day at student housing, I spent countless hours retreating to my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I am thrilled to say that I have forged some of the best friendships of my life. These bonds have transformed into my second family, both in my course and throughout the university.
What aided me in this process? Taking that bold step to engage with others, even when it was uncomfortable. Initiating casual conversations in small doses proved essential. If you don’t feel prepared immediately, don’t fret—there are numerous icebreaker activities and opportunities created to facilitate connections with others. Above all, I discovered that being genuine is the best strategy. With such a rich diversity at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who reflect your interests and values.
### Navigating the Shift to University Academics
Adapting to the academic expectations of university presented another major challenge. The transition from A-levels to university-level coursework was stark, and the shift between the first and second terms felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities amidst a cohort of high-achieving peers.
What helped me during those periods of self-doubt was the recognition that I wasn’t alone. Everyone was grappling with similar challenges, and if I didn’t grasp something, it was likely that others were in the same boat. Learning to ask for help became my most crucial survival skill during my first year. Whether reaching out to peers or seeking advice from faculty, I discovered that collaboration and assistance made a significant impact.
### Assistance from the Materials Department
A highlight of my experience has been the exceptional support from the Materials Science and Engineering faculty. They truly want their students to thrive and are understanding of the challenges we face. Throughout the year, they fostered open dialogue, addressing our concerns and providing guidance.
Although I didn’t fully appreciate the available pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not utilizing it sooner. Taking on the position of a year well-being representative was a bold move, but it became one of the best choices I made. It allowed me to establish connections with staff and gain insight into the resources accessible to students. My recommendation? Make the most of the support systems available—whether academic assistance, pastoral care, or simply forging relationships with your professors. You can never have too much help.
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on my first year at university, I have learned a great deal. Those early anxieties—both before starting and throughout the year—were often exaggerated, and there’s always help out there if you seek it. I’ve realized that I’m never genuinely alone, whether through friendships, staff support, or the broader university network. Most importantly, I’ve figured out how to juggle the pressures of exams and deadlines while also savoring moments of joy and fun.
As I move ahead, I am eager to continue my growth, learning, and fully embracing my time here at Imperial.
