**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being someone who has always been introverted and reserved, venturing into the unfamiliar was not exactly where I felt at ease. Now, reflecting on an academic year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment, I can appreciate how much I’ve grown and the progress I’ve made.
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends
One of the most daunting hurdles I encountered at the beginning of university was the quest to forge friendships. This is a common worry for many incoming students—and it certainly applied to me. On my inaugural day at student residence, just days before classes commenced, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself to my peers.
Fast forward to now, and I can assertively say that I’ve formed some of the most cherished friendships of my life. The individuals I’ve encountered here feel like a second family. All it took was breaking out of my shell and initiating small conversations with others in similar situations.
What did I take away from this? Taking that initial step early on is always rewarding. If you’re not prepared or don’t feel at ease initially, don’t stress—there are numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet new people. Most critically, just be true to yourself. With such a vibrant mix of individuals at university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with your interests and beliefs.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major challenge was acclimating to the course load and the complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels to university was stark, with the transition from the first term to the second being even more pronounced. It wasn’t always straightforward to uphold confidence in such a rigorous environment. There were instances when I measured myself against others and doubted my capabilities.
What assisted me in overcoming this? Reminding myself that everyone was confronting similar challenges. If I struggled with a concept, there’s a good chance others did too. The crucial lesson learned during my initial year was the importance of seeking assistance—whether from fellow students or faculty. This is perhaps the most pivotal insight I gained this year: don’t shy away from asking for help.
### Assistance from the Materials Department
On the subject of support, the faculty in the Materials department have been exceptional. They sincerely want students to thrive and are acutely aware of our challenges. Throughout the year, they kept open lines of communication with us and demonstrated understanding toward our difficulties.
I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until the latter part of the year, and I regret not doing so earlier. At the start, I did take a significant step by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to foster connections with faculty members, which turned out to be invaluable. There are countless ways to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My recommendation? Take full advantage of the support and resources at your disposal—you can never have too much help.
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to recognize that much of the apprehension I experienced—both before starting university and throughout the year—was unwarranted. An abundance of support exists, both from staff and fellow students, to assist you in navigating the various challenges.
This year has reinforced that I’m never truly alone, even during stressful periods like exams and deadlines. It has also taught me how to balance diligent work with having fun.
If you’re on the cusp of beginning your university adventure, know that feeling anxious is completely normal. But keep in mind: with the appropriate mindset and support, you’ll evolve, cultivate meaningful relationships, and create unforgettable memories.
