**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, fear, and uncertainty about what was coming. I was about to begin my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and reserved, jumping into such a significant life shift felt intimidating. Now, reflecting on this past academic year, I recognize a time of tremendous personal development, challenges, and memorable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?

### Conquering the Fear of Socializing

One of the most daunting parts of starting university was forming friendships. If you’re a prospective student reading this, you may relate—it’s a widespread worry. On my first day at student accommodation, a few days prior to the term officially commencing, I spent the entire day cloistered in my room, too anxious to go out and introduce myself to others.

Fast forward to now, and I’m delighted to say that I’ve forged some of the most significant friendships of my life. My friends here at Imperial have become my second family, and it all began with brief, uncomplicated chats with others who were just as apprehensive as I was.

So, what have I discovered? Taking that initial courageous step at the start of the year is essential. If you’re not prepared right away, don’t stress—there will be myriad icebreaker events and avenues to engage with others. Most importantly, just be authentic. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to meet individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another significant challenge was adapting to the increased workload and the heightened complexity of the coursework. The transition from A-levels to university was substantial, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. At times, I questioned my capabilities, particularly when I observed peers studying and seemingly thriving.

What enabled me to persevere was the awareness that everyone was navigating similar struggles. If I didn’t grasp certain concepts, it was likely that others were encountering the same difficulties. The crucial lesson here? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance. Whether from your classmates or the teaching staff, asking for help is one of the most vital skills to cultivate during your first year.

### The Outstanding Staff

On the topic of staff, the Materials Science department at Imperial is remarkable. The lecturers and support personnel truly care about student success and are understanding of the obstacles we encounter. They maintain consistent communication with us throughout the year, addressing our concerns and offering guidance.

I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support available until the year’s conclusion, and I regret not doing it sooner. Initially, I did take a brave step by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to form connections with staff members, which proved to be invaluable. There are numerous ways to connect with staff, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My suggestion? Maximize the resources available to you—you can never have too much support!

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on this past year, I’ve learned that much of the anxiety I felt—both before entering university and throughout my time here—was often baseless. The encouragement from staff and fellow students made a tremendous impact. I’ve realized that I’m never truly isolated, and I’ve figured out how to balance the stress of exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and enjoyment.

As I progress, I’m eager to see what the next chapter of my university experience will bring. If you’re about to begin yours, remember: take that leap, stay true to yourself, and don’t shy away from seeking help.
