**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months past, in October 2022, I was brimming with anxiety, uncertainty, and self-doubt as I prepared to begin my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). For someone who had always been introverted and reserved, diving into this new chapter seemed quite intimidating. Now, reflecting on an academic year rich with development, obstacles, and abundant happiness, I can assert that it’s been a life-changing experience. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most daunting tasks I encountered was forming friendships. Starting university can be quite overwhelming, and if you’re a future student reading this, you might be feeling similarly. On my very first day in student housing, just before the semester started, I spent a full day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself.

Fast forward to now, and I’m pleased to report that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever known. My colleagues and I have created a second family here at Imperial, and it all stemmed from a little small talk with others who were equally anxious.

So, what have I discovered? I’ve learned that taking a leap of faith early on is beneficial. If diving right in feels daunting, fret not—there are many icebreaker events and chances to engage with others. Most importantly, I found that being authentic is essential. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re likely to meet others who resonate with your interests and values.

### Addressing the Academic Hurdles
Another major challenge was adapting to the demanding workload and the heightened complexity of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university was tangible, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more formidable. It’s easy to feel daunted or to question your capabilities when you observe others studying and wonder if you are measuring up.

What assisted me during these instances was the awareness that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you find something hard to grasp, others probably are too. The best piece of advice I can offer is to seek assistance—whether from your classmates or the faculty. Learning to ask for help may be the most crucial skill to cultivate in your first year.

### The Encouraging Faculty
Speaking of assistance, the personnel in the Materials department have been outstanding. They sincerely desire for students to thrive and demonstrate understanding towards the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication with us open, addressing our concerns and providing direction.

Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had engaged earlier. Initially, I took a step by becoming a year well-being representative, which helped me cultivate connections with staff members. This experience turned out to be priceless. There are numerous ways to interact with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My main takeaway? Make the most of the resources and support available to you—you can never receive too much help!

### Insights Gained
Looking back on this past year, I’ve come to realize that many of the anxieties I experienced—both prior to starting university and throughout the year—were unfounded. With the extensive array of support options provided by staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. This year has taught me how to manage exam and deadline stress alongside moments of enjoyment and fun.

To anyone poised to embark on their own university adventure: embrace the challenges, take those leaps of faith, and always remember that assistance is readily available.
