**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was awash with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone naturally shy and introspective, plunging into this new phase felt daunting. However, reflecting back, I recognize a year filled with development, obstacles, and ample enjoyment. So, what has this year imparted to me, and what is my current standing?

### Overcoming the Difficulty of Making Friends
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered at the outset of university was forging friendships. If you’re a prospective student perusing this, it’s probable that this is one of your chief concerns as well. On my inaugural day in student housing, just a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of my closest friendships ever.

At Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family—both within my academic program and across the institution. It merely required a bit of casual conversation with others who were experiencing similar feelings. My takeaway from this is that taking the initiative at the year’s commencement is always worthwhile. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret—numerous icebreaker activities and chances to interact abound. Most crucially, just be you. With such a varied student body, you’re sure to connect with individuals who align with your interests and values.

### Navigating the Academic Transition
Another noteworthy hurdle was adapting to the intensity and complexity of the coursework. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s simple to feel inundated in such a setting, especially when you observe others studying and begin to question your own capabilities.

What aided me in maneuvering through this was the understanding that everyone is facing similar challenges. If something confounds you, it’s likely that others are grappling with it as well. The vital point is to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson from my first year—do not hesitate to reach out to your classmates or teaching staff for assistance.

### The Significance of Supportive Staff
On the subject of staff, I cannot stress enough how remarkable the Materials department team is. They genuinely desire for students to flourish and are mindful of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they upheld open channels of communication and showed understanding towards our difficulties.

Although I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral support available until later in the year, I wish I had utilized it earlier. At the start of the year, I took the initiative to become a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to forge connections with faculty members, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are countless avenues to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My primary takeaway here is to leverage the support offered—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained
Looking back on my first year, I’ve come to realize that the apprehension I felt—both prior to starting university and throughout the year—was often unfounded. An abundance of support exists, from staff to fellow students, to assist you in overcoming any hurdles. This year has taught me that I am never alone and that balancing academic pressure with joyful moments is entirely feasible.

To anyone on the brink of beginning their university adventure, my guidance is straightforward: take the plunge, remain true to yourself, and don’t shy away from seeking help. University is an era for development, education, and forming lasting bonds, and the available support systems are designed to help you excel.
