**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being someone who has always been introverted and quiet, plunging into this new phase felt quite daunting. Now, as I reflect on an academic year marked by personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment, I can appreciate how much I’ve learned and how far I’ve progressed.
### Conquering the Fear of Friendships
One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered was establishing new friendships. For many incoming students, this is often a primary concern about starting university, and I was no different. On my first day moving into my accommodations, just days before classes commenced, I spent an entire day in my room, too afraid to go out and introduce myself to others.
Fast forward to now, and I can assertively say that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, both in my course and around the university. It all kicked off with casual conversations and connecting with those who were feeling just as uncertain as I was.
What did I take away from this? Making that first move at the beginning of the year is essential. Even if you feel unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret—there are numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet new people. Most importantly, just be authentic. With such a diverse student body, you are sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and beliefs.
### Addressing the Academic Hurdles
Another considerable barrier was adapting to the workload and the greater complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels to university was evident, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or doubt your capabilities when observing others studying and thriving.
What assisted me through this was the realization that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If something is unclear to you, chances are others are equally puzzled. The key takeaway was to seek assistance—whether from classmates or teaching staff. This could be the most pivotal lesson I gained in my first year: never hesitate to reach out for support.
### The Value of Encouraging Staff
Speaking of support, the personnel in the Materials department have been remarkable. They genuinely care about student success and are keenly aware of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept open lines of communication with us and displayed understanding toward our difficulties.
Even though I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support available until the year’s end, I wish I had sought it out earlier. Stepping into the role of a well-being representative for the year was a significant leap for me, but it ended up being one of the best choices I made. It allowed me to forge connections with staff members, which has been invaluable. There are plenty of opportunities to engage with staff, and doing so can have a tremendous impact. My main lesson? Make the most out of the support available—you can never receive too much assistance.
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on the past year, I’ve learned that the anxiety I felt before and during university was often unfounded. With the comprehensive support options provided by both staff and fellow students, I was never truly alone. I’ve discovered how to balance the stress of exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and enjoyment.
Ultimately, my first year at Imperial has been a journey of self-exploration, development, and connectivity. For anyone about to undertake a similar journey, remember: take the plunge, request assistance, and embrace the journey.
