**Reflections on My Initial Year Studying Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Almost a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was about to start my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been quiet and withdrawn, plunging into this new phase felt like taking a leap into deep waters. Now, as I reflect on an academic year brimming with personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment, I can clearly see how much I’ve grown and how far I’ve traveled.

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most fear-inducing challenges I encountered was forming friendships. Beginning university can feel intimidating, and if you’re an incoming student reading this, you might share these fears. On my initial day in student housing, just days before classes commenced, I spent a whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to emerge and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever known.

The secret was to venture outside my comfort zone and initiate brief conversations with others who were equally apprehensive. I’ve created a second family here at Imperial, all starting from that first courageous step. My suggestion? Be fearless in the early days of the semester. If you’re not yet prepared or feeling uneasy, that’s perfectly fine—there will be plenty of social events and chances to connect with others. Above all, be true to yourself. With such a rich tapestry of backgrounds at Imperial, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another substantial challenge was adapting to the heavier workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the jump from the first term to the second seemed even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel swamped or question your capabilities when observing others study and wondering if you measure up.

What assisted me was recalling that everyone was experiencing similar struggles. If something is unclear to you, it’s likely that other students feel the same. The best approach is to seek assistance—be it from classmates or faculty members. Learning to ask for help is one of the most important skills you can cultivate in your first year.

### Assistance from the Materials Department

On the topic of help, I can’t stress enough how incredible the staff in the Materials department are. They genuinely care about students’ success and understand the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept the lines of communication open and provided unwavering support.

Even though I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until late in the year, I wish I had done so earlier. At the outset, I took a chance by becoming a year well-being representative, which enabled me to connect with faculty members. This experience was immensely fulfilling, and I encourage others to seize similar opportunities. Familiarizing yourself with the staff and utilizing the support they extend can greatly enhance your university journey.

### Insights Gained

In retrospect, this year has shown me that the apprehension I felt—both prior to starting university and throughout the year—was often unfounded. With the extensive range of support from staff and fellow students, I was never truly isolated. I’ve learned to embrace challenges, request assistance, and find happiness even amid the rigors of exams and deadlines.

As I progress forward, I’m thankful for the personal growth I’ve undergone and the friendships I’ve formed. To anyone getting ready for university, understand that it’s perfectly normal to feel anxious, but also have faith that you’ll navigate your path. Take risks, be authentic, and don’t hesitate to lean on the support that’s available to you.
