**Reflections on My Initial Year Studying Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Almost a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was about to begin my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been rather shy and reserved, venturing into the unknown seemed like a daunting challenge. Now, reflecting on my first year, I recognize it as a time of substantial personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Fear of Forming Friendships

One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered at the beginning of university was forming friendships. For prospective students, this may also be a primary concern. On my move-in day, just a few days before classes started, I spent the entire day hidden away in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others.

Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships of my life. These connections have grown into a second family for me, both within my program and throughout the university. It all began with small interactions—engaging in light conversation with individuals who were just as apprehensive as I was.

What have I discovered? Taking that initial leap of faith at the beginning of the year is invariably worthwhile. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease right away, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to socialize with others. Most importantly, remain authentic. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter people who resonate with you.

### Addressing the Academic Difficulties

Another major challenge was acclimating to the workload and the complexity of the course material. Transitioning from A-levels to university was striking, and the shift from the first term to the second term was even more intense. It’s quite easy to feel inundated and question your own abilities, especially when observing others studying with assurance.

What supported me during these times was the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you struggle to grasp a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The crucial thing is to seek assistance—whether from your classmates or your instructors. Learning to reach out for help may be one of the most beneficial skills to acquire during your first year.

### Assistance from the Materials Department

Speaking of support, I cannot stress enough how encouraging the Materials Science faculty are. They genuinely desire for students to excel and show understanding of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us, addressing our worries and providing direction.

Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support offered until the end of the year, I wish I had started earlier. In the beginning, I took a bold step and became a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to forge connections with faculty members, which turned out to be immensely beneficial. Engaging with your lecturers and tutors, whether through formal roles or informal interactions, is one of the most rewarding things you can do for yourself.

What’s my overriding message here? Leverage the support systems at your disposal. Whether it’s academic assistance, pastoral support, or simply someone to listen, there’s no such thing as too much help.

### Insights Gained

This past year has revealed to me that the apprehension I experienced—both prior to starting university and throughout the year—was frequently unjustified. With the array of support from faculty and fellow students, I was never truly isolated. I have learned to manage the pressures of exams and deadlines alongside moments filled with joy and enjoyment.

Reflecting on my journey, I am astonished by how much I have developed in just one year. From conquering my initial anxieties to embracing the challenges of university life, this experience has been transformative. If you are about to begin your own university journey, understand that it’s normal to feel anxious—but also recognize that you have the potential to thrive.
