**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was filled with nerves, anxiety, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was preparing to begin my first year as a student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had previously been shy and introverted, stepping into the unfamiliar was not something I was used to. In hindsight, I can see a year brimming with personal development, challenges, and ample happiness. But what insights have I gained from this experience, and where do I find myself now?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most intimidating hurdles I encountered was the quest for friendships. For countless incoming students, this is a predominant concern upon entering university, and I was no exception. On my initial day in student housing, just days before classes began, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself.
Now, as I look back, I can confidently declare that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever known. My companions at Imperial have come to feel like a second family. All it took was stepping beyond my comfort zone and initiating simple conversations with others who were experiencing similar feelings.
So, what have I learned? I discovered that taking that courageous leap at the start of the year is always worthwhile. If you feel unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret—numerous icebreaker events and activities are tailored to help you meet others. Most critically, I realized that remaining true to yourself is the best strategy. With such a diversity of people throughout the course and the university, you are bound to encounter those who resonate with your interests and values.
### Addressing Academic Obstacles
Adjusting to the academic demands and the complexity of the material was yet another major challenge. The transition from A-levels to university proved difficult, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities when surrounded by high-achieving peers.
What aided me during those tough times was the understanding that everyone was navigating similar struggles. If I found something perplexing, it was likely that my classmates were struggling with it too. The key takeaway here? Don’t be afraid to seek assistance. Whether it’s from fellow students or faculty, asking for help is one of the most vital skills you can cultivate in your first year.
### The Significance of Supportive Faculty
Speaking of support, I must emphasize the remarkable faculty in the Materials department. They genuinely care about student success and understand the obstacles we face. Throughout the year, they maintained open communication and provided various resources to assist us.
While I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had sought it out sooner. Taking on the role of a year well-being representative was one of the significant steps I took at the year’s start. This position enabled me to forge connections with faculty members, which proved indispensable. There are numerous ways to get to know the staff, and doing so can greatly enhance your university experience. My essential takeaway? Utilize the help and resources available to you—you can never have too much support!
### Insights Gained
In reflecting on this year, I’ve come to understand that much of the anxiety I felt—both before beginning university and during the academic year—was largely unfounded. With the extensive support provided by staff and fellow students, I was never truly alone. This year has equipped me to balance exam stress and deadlines with moments of joy and self-exploration.
To anyone preparing to embark on their university journey: embrace the hurdles, take those courageous leaps, and remember that assistance is always within your grasp.
