**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Almost ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead as I began my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). As someone who was previously shy and introverted, venturing into the unknown was decidedly outside my comfort zone. Reflecting on this past year, I realize it has been a transformative experience—rich with personal development, challenges, and memorable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?
### Conquering the Challenge of Making Friends
One of the most daunting obstacles at the beginning of university was forming friendships. This is a major concern for many incoming students, and I was no different. On my first day in student housing, just days ahead of the semester starting, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to step outside and meet anyone. Fast forward to now, I can proudly assert that I’ve forged some of the closest friendships of my life—friends who resemble a second family.
How did this transformation occur? It began with initiating small conversations and connecting with others who were experiencing similar feelings. I discovered that taking the initiative at the start of the year is vital. If you’re not quite ready or feel uncomfortable initially, that’s totally fine—there are numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet new people. Most importantly, I learned to embrace my true self. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’ll definitely find individuals who align with your interests and values.
### Addressing the Academic Workload
Adjusting to the university’s academic expectations presented another major challenge. The leap from A-levels to university-level coursework was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. It’s all too easy to feel inundated or question your abilities when surrounded by such high-achieving students.
What aided my adjustment was the understanding that everyone is navigating similar waters. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, it’s likely that others are facing the same issue. The essential thing is to seek assistance—whether that’s from classmates or teaching staff. In my view, this is the most crucial skill to cultivate during your first year.
### The Value of Supportive Staff
On the topic of staff, the Materials department at Imperial is remarkable. The lecturers and support personnel are genuinely invested in student success and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. They keep communication channels open throughout the year and are always available to assist.
I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support offered to me until later in the year, but I now wish I had prioritized it sooner. One of the best choices I made was taking on the role of year well-being representative. This opportunity allowed me to forge connections with staff members, which proved invaluable. Whether through formal roles or informal chats, establishing rapport with staff is one of the most beneficial actions you can take for yourself. My key takeaway here? Make the most of the available support—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
This past year has illustrated to me that the anxiety I felt before commencing university—and at various points throughout the year—was often misplaced. There are myriad support systems in place, from faculty to fellow students, to help you navigate any challenges. I’ve come to understand that I’m never alone and that it’s entirely possible to balance academic pressures with enjoyable moments and fun.
Looking back, I recognize how much I’ve matured since that anxious fresher hiding away in their room. University has been a journey of self-discovery, resilience, and connection, and I eagerly anticipate what the next chapter will bring.
