**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overcome with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was on the verge of beginning my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For an individual who had always been timid and introverted, venturing into the unknown was a formidable prospect. Now, as I reflect on the past academic year, I recognize a time of significant personal development, obstacles, and unforgettable memories. So, what lessons has this year imparted to me, and what is my current position?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
Among the most fearsome challenges I encountered at the onset of university was the task of making friends. If you’re an incoming student perusing this, you may feel a similar sense of dread. On my first day at the student residence, just days prior to the beginning of term, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too apprehensive to step outside and introduce myself to others.
Fast forward to the present, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced. The individuals I’ve met here—both within my program and throughout the university—have become like a second family. It all began with casual conversations and connecting with others who were experiencing the same situation as I was.
What did this experience teach me? First, taking that initial leap of faith is essential. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet new people. Secondly, the most important aspect is to remain authentic. With such a vibrant community at Imperial, you’re bound to encounter people who resonate with your interests and beliefs.
### Addressing the Academic Obstacles
Another significant challenge was adapting to the academic workload and the complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was substantial, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more daunting. It’s easy to feel inundated and doubt your capabilities, especially when observing peers seemingly flourishing.
What assisted me during those moments of uncertainty was the understanding that everyone is in a similar situation. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, it’s likely that others are as well. The crucial step is to seek assistance—whether from your classmates or the teaching staff. Learning to request support is perhaps the most invaluable lesson from the first year.
### The Remarkable Support from Faculty
Speaking of assistance, the staff within the Materials department are truly outstanding. They genuinely wish for students to thrive and are understanding of the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us and offered numerous resources to aid us in navigating academic and personal challenges.
Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until the year’s end, I wish I had done so earlier. Early in the year, I took a step by becoming a year well-being representative, which enabled me to forge strong connections with faculty members. This proved to be extremely beneficial. Whether through formal roles or casual exchanges, getting to know the staff is one of the most rewarding actions you can take for yourself. My key takeaway? Make the most of the help and resources at your disposal—there’s no such thing as too much support.
### Insights Gained
In summary, this year has illustrated to me that the anxiety I felt before starting university—and even throughout the year—was often misplaced. With the abundant support from both faculty and fellow students, I was never truly alone. I’ve learned how to juggle the stress of exams and deadlines alongside moments of happiness and enjoyment.
Looking back, I realize how much I’ve evolved since that anxious fresher who secluded themselves in their room on the first day. This year has been a transformative odyssey, and I await with anticipation the adventures that the next chapter will bring.
