**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty as I geared up to embark on my studies in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a fresh first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was unfamiliar territory for my formerly shy and reserved personality. Now, as I reflect on the past academic year, I perceive it as a journey filled with personal development, obstacles, and ample enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?
### Conquering the Challenge of Friend-Making
One of the most daunting elements of starting university was the quest to make friends. For many new students, this can be a significant concern. On my initial day at student housing, a few days prior to the term’s official commencement, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, far too apprehensive to go out and introduce myself. Fast forward to today, and I can confidently assert that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever known—friends who truly feel like family.
What shifted? It began with small initiatives, such as engaging in light conversation with individuals who shared my predicament. I discovered that taking a leap of faith early on is essential. Even if you’re not feeling prepared, there will be an abundance of icebreaker events and chances to mingle with others. Most critically, I learned the importance of being authentic. With such a diverse cohort at Imperial, you’re certain to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the heightened complexity of course materials. The leap from A-levels to university was stark, and the transition from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities when observing others studying and wondering if you’re measuring up.
What assisted me in overcoming this challenge was the realization that everyone is facing similar struggles. If you’re finding it tough to grasp something, there’s a good chance others are too. The crucial step is to seek assistance—whether from your classmates or the teaching staff. Cultivating the ability to ask for help is probably the most beneficial skill you can acquire during your first year.
### The Value of Supportive Staff
Regarding support, the staff within the Materials department have been extraordinary. They genuinely care about student success and demonstrate understanding toward the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the year, they fostered open lines of communication with us and were always ready to address our concerns.
Although I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral support available until later in the year, I wish I had earlier. One of the wisest choices I made was to become a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which proved invaluable. Whether through formal roles or informal interactions, getting to know your lecturers and tutors can lead to significant benefits. My major takeaway? Utilize the support systems available—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
In summary, this year has shown me that the apprehension I felt before and during my initial university experience was often unwarranted. With numerous support resources from both staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. I’ve learned to juggle the stress of exams and deadlines while also cherishing moments of happiness and enjoyment.
Looking back, I take pride in my progress. My first year at Imperial has been a transformative experience, and I eagerly anticipate what lies ahead as I continue my journey in Materials Science and Engineering.
