**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding my future. I was on the verge of embarking on my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been introverted and cautious, venturing into the unknown was a formidable challenge. Now, as I reflect on my first year, I recognize a time of tremendous personal development, obstacles overcome, and a great deal of enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained, and how do I see myself now?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends
One of the most daunting hurdles I encountered was forging friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this may be one of your primary worries as well. On my first day settling into my accommodations, just days before classes commenced, I spent the entire day confining myself to my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself to others.
Fast forward to today, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced. Here at Imperial, and throughout my course, I’ve cultivated a second family. All it required was stepping beyond my comfort zone and initiating small conversations with others in similar situations.
What have I learned? Firstly, it’s beneficial to take that plunge at the beginning of the year. Even if you feel unprepared or uncomfortable, there will be an abundance of icebreaker activities and chances to socialize with others. Secondly, the best approach is to be your authentic self. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who align with your interests and values.
### Addressing the Academic Shift
Another major challenge was acclimating to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels to university was significant, and the transition from the first term to the second proved even more demanding. Being in such a challenging academic atmosphere can sometimes undermine your confidence, particularly when observing others studying and feeling as though you’re lagging behind.
What aided me was the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you find something puzzling, it’s likely that others are facing the same issue. The key is to seek assistance—whether from peers or faculty members. This may be the most crucial skill to cultivate in your first year.
### The Value of Support and Relationship Building
Speaking of faculty, the Materials Science department at Imperial is exceptional. The lecturers and tutors genuinely desire for you to succeed and understand the hurdles students encounter. They maintain open lines of communication throughout the year and are consistently available to assist.
I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support available until the year’s end, and I wish I had realized its importance earlier. At the beginning of the year, I took a bold step and became a well-being representative for my year. This opportunity enabled me to foster connections with staff members, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience.
My main takeaway here is straightforward: fully leverage the support accessible to you. Whether it’s academic guidance, pastoral care, or simply someone to talk to, having support is always advantageous.
### Insights Gained
Looking back, this past year has shown me that the anxiety I felt—both prior to starting university and during the academic year—was frequently unwarranted. An abundance of support is available, from both faculty and fellow students, to assist in overcoming any difficulties. I’ve come to understand that I’m never truly alone, and I’ve learned how to balance having fun while managing the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.
As I look ahead, I’m eager to see what the next year will bring. If you’re about to embark on your own university adventure, my advice is to embrace the challenges, take those bold leaps, and remember that help is always close at hand.
