**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was about to commence my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been somewhat shy and introverted, embarking on this new phase felt like plunging into unfamiliar waters. Now, as I reflect on an academic year brimming with growth, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment, I realize how much I’ve gained and how far I’ve journeyed.

### Conquering the Anxiety of Building Friendships

One of the most daunting elements of starting university was the task of making friends. If you’re an incoming student reading this, it’s probably on your mind as well. I recall my first day in student housing, where I stayed holed up in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet new people. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve forged some of the strongest friendships I’ve ever experienced.

These connections didn’t materialize overnight—they began with small gestures, like engaging in light conversation with others who were navigating the same experience. Gradually, these interactions blossomed into what I now view as my second family. My greatest insight? Take that initial leap of faith. Even if you’re not entirely comfortable, there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to engage with fellow students. Most importantly, stay true to yourself. With such a varied group of individuals at Imperial, you are sure to find those who resonate with your interests and values.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Adapting to the academic rigor of university was yet another considerable hurdle. The transition from A-levels to university-level assignments was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel daunted or question your capabilities when observing peers who appear to have everything under control.

What assisted me in overcoming these feelings was the understanding that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you’re finding something difficult to grasp, it’s likely that others are as well. The crucial step is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty members. Learning to request help is arguably the most crucial skill you can cultivate in your first year.

### The Significance of Supportive Staff

On the subject of support, the faculty within the Materials Science department are outstanding. They genuinely care about student success and are understanding of the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us, addressing our worries and providing guidance.

Although I didn’t fully capitalize on the pastoral support available until later in the year, I wish I had done so earlier. One of the best choices I made was becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to cultivate relationships with faculty members, which turned out to be tremendously beneficial. Whether through formal roles or informal interactions, getting acquainted with your lecturers and tutors can greatly enhance your experience. My recommendation? Make the most of the support systems at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

This year has shown me that the anxiety I felt before and during university was frequently without basis. With the extensive support options provided by both staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. I’ve learned how to manage the stress of exams and deadlines alongside moments of joy and laughter.

Reflecting on my journey, I can see how much I’ve evolved, both academically and personally. Entering university might seem like a daunting leap into the unknown, but it’s a leap that is definitely worth taking.
