**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I experienced a mix of nervousness, anxiety, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was on the brink of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been introverted, jumping into this new phase felt overwhelming. Now, reflecting on the year, I recognize it as a period of development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current stance?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most daunting challenges I encountered at the beginning of university was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this may also be one of your top worries. On my first day in student housing, just days before classes officially commenced, I found myself remaining in my room the entire day, too daunted to go out and meet others.

Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly state that I’ve created some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had. My classmates and colleagues have turned into my second family at Imperial. All it required was stepping out of my comfort zone and initiating brief conversations with those experiencing the same feelings of apprehension.

What did this teach me? Taking that first step is invaluable. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be numerous icebreaker events and occasions to engage with others. And above all, just be yourself. With such a varied community at university, you’re sure to meet people who resonate with your passions and principles.

### Adapting to the Academic Shift

Another considerable challenge was getting accustomed to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels to university was striking, and the transition from the first term to the second felt even more formidable. It’s common to feel inundated or to question your capabilities when you observe others studying with certainty.

What assisted me in this was realizing that everyone is facing similar hurdles. If you’re finding it difficult to grasp a topic, it’s likely that your peers are too. The crucial factor is to seek assistance—either from your colleagues or the teaching staff. Cultivating the ability to seek help might be the most vital skill you can acquire in your first year.

### Encouragement from the Materials Department

While discussing support, the staff in the Materials department truly stand out. They sincerely desire for students to thrive and are fully cognizant of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept open lines of communication and were always willing to listen to our concerns.

Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until the latter part of the year, I regret not doing so earlier. Early on, I took a step forward by becoming a year well-being representative. This opportunity enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which turned out to be priceless. There are numerous avenues to engage with the staff, and doing so can greatly enhance your university experience. My primary takeaway? Leverage the support systems at your disposal—you can never have too much help!

### Insights Gained

Looking back on my first year, I’ve realized that the apprehension I felt prior to commencing university, and throughout the year, was often unfounded. With the variety of support resources available—from faculty to fellow students—there’s perpetually someone ready to help.

This year has demonstrated to me that I’m never completely alone, even during stressful periods such as exams and due dates. It has also illustrated how to strike a balance between diligent work and relishing the university life.

As I look ahead, I’m eager to continue evolving, learning, and fully embracing my time at Imperial. To anyone embarking on their university adventure: face the challenges head-on, make those bold moves, and remember that assistance is always just around the corner.
