**Thoughts on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what was ahead. I was on the verge of beginning my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been quiet and introverted, plunging into this new era felt daunting. Now, reflecting on an academic year rich with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment, I can’t help but ponder the insights I’ve gained and how much I’ve advanced.
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most intimidating parts of starting university was forming friendships. If you’re a future student, this is likely one of your main worries as well. On my initial day in student housing, just before classes commenced, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too afraid to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the deepest friendships I’ve ever experienced—friendships that feel like a second family.
How did this transformation occur? It began with casual conversations and connecting with others who were experiencing similar situations. The most significant lesson I learned was to take that initial leap of faith early on. If you’re not prepared right away, don’t stress—there will be a wealth of icebreaker events and avenues to meet new people. Above all, remain authentic. With such a vibrant community at Imperial, you’re sure to discover individuals who align with your interests and values.
### Facing Academic Challenges
Adapting to the demands and complexity of university-level coursework was yet another major obstacle. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities, particularly when observing others studying and assuming they have everything sorted out.
What aided me in navigating this was the understanding that everyone is on a similar journey. If you’re having difficulty with a topic, it’s likely others are as well. The vital action is to seek assistance—whether from your classmates or the teaching staff. Learning to ask for support is one of the most essential skills to cultivate in your first year.
### The Value of Support
Speaking of staff, the Materials department at Imperial is outstanding. The instructors and support personnel genuinely care about student success and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. They foster open lines of communication throughout the year and are always available to resolve our issues.
Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support offered until late in the year, I wish I had engaged with it sooner. Stepping into the role of a year well-being representative was a courageous choice for me, but it ultimately became one of the most gratifying choices I made. It enabled me to build connections with staff members, which proved invaluable. Whether through formal roles or casual exchanges, forming relationships with your instructors and support staff can significantly impact your experience. My primary takeaway? Make the most of the assistance and resources at your disposal—you can never have too much support.
### Insights Gained
This year has revealed to me that much of the anxiety I felt before and during my university experience was frequently unnecessary. With a plethora of support options provided by both staff and fellow students, I was never truly isolated. I’ve mastered balancing stress from exams and deadlines with joyful and pleasurable experiences, and I’ve evolved in ways I never anticipated.
If you’re about to embark on your own university adventure, understand that it is normal to feel anxious. But also recognize that you’ll encounter countless chances to grow, connect, and flourish. Take that leap, ask for support, and most importantly, savor the journey.
