**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty concerning what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). For someone who had always been introverted and timid, plunging into this new phase felt intimidating. However, reflecting on the last academic year, I recognize a time of significant personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment. So, what lessons has this year imparted, and where do I currently stand?

### Building Friendships: The Primary Challenge

One of the most anxiety-inducing elements of starting university was meeting new people. If you’re a future student reading this, this is likely a concern for you as well. On my very first day moving into my accommodation, just prior to the term kick-off, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too scared to venture out and introduce myself to others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the best friendships of my life. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and everything began with a few casual chats with others who were in similar situations.

So, what’s the takeaway? I discovered that taking that first step is always worthwhile. Even if you feel unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breakers and activities designed to facilitate connections with others. Most importantly, I realized that the best version of yourself is the one you should present. With such a diverse group of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re likely to find those who resonate with your personality.

### Confronting the Workload and Academic Expectations

Adjusting to the workload and heightened difficulty of the material was another major challenge. There was certainly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into a demanding academic setting can sometimes shake your self-confidence, particularly when you observe your peers studying and feel inadequate in comparison.

What aided me during this period was the understanding that everyone shares similar struggles. If you’re having difficulty understanding something, chances are, others are facing the same issues. Thus, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson I gleaned during my first year: seek help without reservation, whether it’s from classmates or professors.

### Assistance from the Staff

On the topic of staff, the faculty within the Materials department is exceptional. They genuinely care about your success and are fully aware of the hurdles students encounter. They empathize with us and maintain clear lines of communication throughout the academic year. I didn’t truly take advantage of the available pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had utilized it much earlier.

At the start of the year, I made a bold choice to become a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff on a deeper level, which proved invaluable. There are numerous ways to foster relationships with faculty members, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My main piece of advice here? Take full advantage of the support offered. You can never have an excess of help!

### Concluding Thoughts

In summary, this year has revealed to me that the apprehension I felt before and during university was largely unfounded. With the extensive range of support available from both faculty and fellow students, those anxieties can be alleviated. I’ve come to realize that I’m never truly alone, and I’ve figured out how to balance having fun with the inevitable stress of exams and deadlines.
