**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was about to begin my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been somewhat introverted and reserved, plunging into such an unfamiliar and demanding setting felt intimidating. Reflecting back now, I recognize a year rich with growth, obstacles, and remarkable moments of happiness. But what insights have I gained from this journey, and where do I find myself now?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most daunting challenges I encountered was forming friendships. The start of university can feel overwhelming, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, it’s probably one of your biggest concerns. On my first day in my housing, just days before classes commenced, I spent the entirety of that day cocooned in my room, too anxious to venture out and connect with others.

Fast forward to today, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve forged some of the best friendships of my life. The individuals I’ve met here have become akin to a second family for me. It merely required stepping out of my comfort zone and striking up casual conversations with others who were feeling the same way.

So, what lesson did I take away? The crux of the matter is to take that risk, even if it feels intimidating initially. If you’re not quite ready immediately, that’s perfectly fine—there will be numerous ice-breaker events and chances to socialize. Most importantly, just be yourself. With the rich diversity at Imperial, you are sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Addressing the Academic Shift

Another considerable obstacle was adapting to the course workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels to university was stark, and the transition from the first term to the second felt even more formidable. It’s effortless to become overwhelmed or doubt your potential when you observe others studying diligently and appearing to have everything under control.

What benefitted me immensely was the reminder that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you don’t grasp a concept, it’s likely there are others who feel the same. The most effective strategy is to reach out for assistance—whether from classmates or instructors. Learning to ask for help is arguably the most crucial skill you can acquire in your first year.

### The Value of Support

This leads me to another vital takeaway: the remarkable support network provided by the Materials department. The staff sincerely want students to thrive and exhibit compassion towards the difficulties we encounter. They maintain open lines of communication all year long and are consistently eager to assist.

I didn’t fully tap into the available pastoral support until later in the year, but I regret not doing so earlier. Early in the year, I took a brave step by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect more closely with the staff, which proved to be incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with the staff, and doing so can substantially enhance your university experience. My suggestion? Make the most of the resources and support at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

In retrospection, this year has imparted numerous lessons. The apprehensive feelings I experienced—both before starting university and throughout the year—often proved unfounded. With the backing of staff and fellow students, I realized I was never alone in confronting challenges. I also learned how to juggle the stress from exams and deadlines while still carving out time for enjoyment and fun.

In conclusion, my first year at Imperial has been a journey of personal development, resilience, and connection. To anyone about to embark on their own university journey: embrace the jitters, take the plunge, and remember—you can do this.
