**Reflections on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overcome with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the brink of starting my path as a freshman in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and reserved, plunging into such a new and demanding environment seemed daunting. Now, reflecting on the past academic year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, challenges, and numerous joyful experiences. So, what insights has this year provided me, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting elements of commencing university was the prospect of making friends. If you’re an incoming student reading this, it’s likely a concern for you as well. On my initial day in student housing, just days before the term began, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, I can proudly say that I’ve developed some of the closest friendships I have ever known. These bonds have transformed into my second family here at Imperial, beginning with simple, casual chats with fellow students who were equally apprehensive.
What did I take away from this? Taking that first step is vital. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be numerous ice-breaker events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, just be authentic. With such a varied student community, you’re sure to find individuals who align with your interests and beliefs.
### Addressing the Academic Obstacles
Adapting to the demands and rigor of university-level coursework proved to be another major challenge. The leap from A-levels to university was stark, and the transition from the initial term to the subsequent one felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel daunted or doubt your capabilities when you observe others studying hard or excelling. However, here’s the reality: everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, it’s likely others are too.
The solution to tackling this hurdle is straightforward—seek assistance. Whether from your classmates or the instructors, reaching out for help is one of the most valuable skills you can cultivate in your first year.
### The Significance of Supportive Faculty
On the subject of support, the faculty in the Materials department have been outstanding. They genuinely care about the success of their students and understand the difficulties we face. Throughout the year, they fostered open communication with us, addressing our issues and offering assistance.
Though I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support available until late in the year, I wish I had made use of it sooner. As I indicated earlier, taking leaps of faith is crucial, and one such leap for me was stepping up as a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to forge meaningful relationships with faculty members, which turned out to be invaluable. Whether through formal positions or informal interactions, getting acquainted with your lecturers and tutors is one of the best things you can do for yourself. Utilize the resources and support available—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
Upon reflection, this year has revealed to me that the apprehension I experienced before starting university, and even throughout the year, was often misplaced. With the array of support options offered by both faculty and fellow students, I was never entirely on my own. I’ve learned how to manage the stress stemming from exams and deadlines while still enjoying the process, and I’ve become more self-assured in the journey.
If I could share one piece of advice to anyone embarking on their university adventure, it would be this: embrace the obstacles, take those leaps of faith, and remember that help is always nearby.
