**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was engulfed in anxiety, dread, and uncertainty about the journey ahead. I was on the cusp of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). For someone who has always been shy and introverted, immersing myself in the unknown was quite daunting. Reflecting on it now, I recognize a year that was enlightening—filled with personal development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable moments. So, what insights has this year provided, and what is my current position?
### Conquering the Fear of Friendship
One of the primary challenges I encountered early on was forging friendships. Entering university can be intimidating, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, it’s likely a concern you share. On my first day in student housing, a few days ahead of the term, I spent the entire time cooped up in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself.
Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced. The individuals I’ve encountered here—both within my program and throughout the university—have become like a second family to me. All it required was stepping outside my comfort zone and engaging in casual conversations with others who were equally apprehensive.
So, what’s the takeaway? Taking that first bold step at the beginning of the year is always worthwhile. If you’re not quite prepared or at ease, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to bond with others. Most importantly, just be authentic. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you’re sure to discover individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Addressing the Academic Shift
Another considerable challenge was adapting to the workload and the increased complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels to university was apparent, and the transition from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. Being in such a challenging academic setting can occasionally undermine your confidence, especially when you observe others studying diligently while feeling as if you’re lagging.
What assisted me in navigating this was realizing that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, there’s a good chance others are too. The essential strategy is to seek support—whether from your colleagues or the teaching staff. Learning to ask for help is arguably the most crucial skill you can acquire in your initial year.
### Assistance from the Staff
Speaking of staff, the Materials department at Imperial is exceptional. The instructors and tutors genuinely care about students’ success and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. They maintain open lines of communication throughout the year and are always ready to address our concerns.
I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had engaged with it sooner. At the beginning of the year, I made a brave move by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to cultivate connections with staff members, turning out to be an invaluable experience. There are countless ways to interact with faculty, and doing so can greatly enhance your university experience. My most significant lesson? Utilize the support provided—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on my initial year, I’ve come to understand that the apprehension I felt—both prior to and during university—was frequently unfounded. With the broad spectrum of support options available from staff and fellow students, there’s always someone to whom you can turn. This year has enlightened me to the fact that I’m never truly alone and that it’s achievable to balance the stress from exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and enjoyment.
As I progress, I’m thankful for the personal development, friendships, and wisdom I’ve acquired. If you’re on the verge of starting your own university journey, understand that feeling apprehensive is completely normal—but also recognize that you possess the ability to conquer those fears and flourish in this new phase of your life.
