**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty as I braced myself for my first-year experience in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). For someone who had always been introverted, taking such a significant leap in my life felt daunting. Reflecting now, I recognize a year that has been life-changing—filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendships

One of the biggest hurdles I encountered was forming friendships. Starting university can be intimidating, and if you’re an incoming student reading this, it’s likely one of your primary worries as well. On my inaugural day at my student accommodation, just a few days ahead of the semester starting, I spent the whole day in my room, too anxious to go out and meet others.

Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the greatest friendships I’ve ever known—friends who feel like family. It all began with brief chats with others who shared my nervousness.

What did I discover? Taking that first step is essential. If you’re not immediately prepared, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker activities and chances to engage with others. Most importantly, be authentic. With such a diverse crowd at university, you’re sure to meet those who resonate with your interests and values.

### Addressing the Academic Hurdles

Adapting to the academic demands and the heightened complexity of university-level material was another major obstacle. The leap from A-levels to university was noticeable, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel daunted or question your capabilities, especially when you observe others studying and assume they have everything sorted.

What aided me was the realization that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If something is unclear, there’s a high chance others are experiencing the same issues. The crucial step is to seek assistance—whether from your classmates or instructors. Learning to ask for help is arguably the most important skill you can cultivate in your first year.

### The Value of Supportive Staff

On the topic of support, the faculty in the Materials department is outstanding. They are genuinely invested in our success and understand the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the academic year, they maintained open lines of communication, addressing our worries and offering valuable guidance.

While I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had started earlier. Early on, I took a risk by volunteering as a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to establish connections with faculty members, which proved to be incredibly beneficial. Whether through formal positions or informal meetings, getting acquainted with the staff is one of the most advantageous things you can do for yourself. My key takeaway? Utilize the support at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance.

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on my first year, I realize that the anxiety I experienced—both before starting university and throughout the year—was frequently unfounded. There is abundant support available, whether from faculty or fellow students, and you are never truly alone.

This year has taught me how to juggle the stress of exams and deadlines while also savoring moments of joy and laughter. Most importantly, it has revealed to me the extent of my capabilities when I push beyond my comfort zone.

If you are about to embark on your own university adventure, keep in mind: take the plunge, seek help, and embrace the opportunities that come your way. You’ll be surprised at how much you can evolve.
