**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I set forth on a path that was filled with anxious excitement and self-doubt. I was about to commence my first year as a newcomer in the [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) program. For someone who had previously been timid and reserved, plunging into this new chapter was quite outside my comfort zone. Now, reflecting on the last academic year, I recognize a time of profound growth, obstacles, and memorable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself now?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends
One of the most daunting elements of beginning university was the task of making friends. If you’re a future student reading this, you might relate to this feeling. On my inaugural day in student housing, just days before classes commenced, I felt so apprehensive that I confined myself to my room all day, too anxious to reach out to anyone. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had—friends who truly feel like a second family.
What made the difference? It all commenced with casual conversations. I recognized that everyone around me shared similar sentiments, and taking that first step to engage with others was transformative. My recommendation? Don’t hesitate to step beyond your comfort zone early on. If you’re not prepared right away, that’s perfectly fine—there will be numerous icebreaker functions and chances to meet individuals. Above all, be authentic. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to find like-minded people.
### Addressing the Academic Hurdles
Adapting to the demands and complexity of university-level coursework was another major challenge. The leap from A-level studies to university was noticeable, and the transition from the first term to the second appeared even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities when observing others study and seemingly thrive.
What assisted me was the realization that I wasn’t alone. Everyone faces difficulties at some point, and if something confuses you, others are likely in the same boat. The essential takeaway is to seek help—whether from your classmates or the academic staff. Learning to ask for assistance is perhaps the most crucial skill to cultivate during your first year.
### The Value of Support and Connections
In relation to support, the staff in the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely care about student success and show understanding toward the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept communication channels open and were always willing to listen to our concerns.
Although I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had reached out sooner. One of the best choices I made was to become a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which turned out to be priceless. Whether through formal positions or informal encounters, getting acquainted with the staff is one of the most beneficial things you can do for yourself. My main takeaway? Utilize the resources and support at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance.
### Lessons Acquired
This year has illuminated the fact that the anxiety I experienced—both prior to and during university—was largely unwarranted. With the wealth of support from both staff and peers, I was never genuinely alone. I’ve learned to manage pressures like exams and deadlines alongside moments of joy and personal growth.
Looking back, I can see the distance I’ve traveled since that anxious rookie hiding in their room. University is a journey of development, and while it may seem intimidating at first, it’s also a remarkable chance to learn, bond, and flourish.
