**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Almost a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty as I geared up to begin my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who used to be quite introverted, plunging into university life felt like a formidable challenge. Now, as I reflect on the past academic year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, obstacles, and numerous joyful experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and where am I today?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Building Friendships
One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered was forging friendships. If you’re a prospective student reading this, you might share similar feelings of trepidation. On my first day in student housing, a few days before classes officially commenced, I spent the entire day concealed in my room, too scared to venture out and introduce myself to others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced—friends who have come to feel like a second family to me.
What shifted? I came to understand that everyone else was experiencing the same feelings of nervousness. It just took a little small talk to thaw the ice. I recognized the value of taking a chance early on. If you’re not quite ready at the start, don’t fret—there are numerous icebreaker events and occasions to connect with others throughout the year. Most critically, I found that embracing your true self is essential. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Adapting to the academic expectations of university presented another major challenge. The leap from A-level studies to university-level coursework was significant, and the transition from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel daunted or second-guess your abilities, especially when you observe others apparently thriving.
What aided me in overcoming this was the understanding that I wasn’t alone. Everyone was dealing with the same issues, and if something was unclear to me, chances were it was unclear to others, too. The most important lesson I learned was the necessity of seeking assistance—whether from peers or faculty. Asking for help is crucial, particularly during your first year.
### The Value of Supportive Educators
One of the highlights of my experience has been the remarkable backing from the Materials department staff. They genuinely care about students’ success and are sympathetic to the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open, addressing our worries and offering guidance.
While I didn’t fully exploit the pastoral support services until late in the year, I wish I had done so sooner. Early on, I embraced the role of a year well-being representative, which allowed me to connect with staff members. This proved to be extremely beneficial, and I urge others to seize similar opportunities. Whether through official positions or informal encounters, getting acquainted with your lecturers and support staff can profoundly impact your experience. The key takeaway? Don’t hesitate to utilize the resources and assistance available—you can never have too much support!
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on this year, I’ve learned that the unease I experienced—both prior to starting university and throughout the year—was often ill-founded. With the wide array of support options provided by staff and fellow students, there’s always someone to reach out to. I’ve realized that I’m never truly alone, and I’ve figured out how to enjoy myself while managing the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.
As I prepare to enter my second year, I feel more self-assured, more connected, and more enthusiastic about what the future holds. To anyone on the verge of starting their own university adventure: welcome the challenges, take those bold steps, and keep in mind that help is always at hand.
