**Thoughts on My Initial Year of Studying Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding what was ahead. I was on the verge of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been quiet and introverted, venturing into this new phase felt quite daunting. Now, reflecting on an academic year brimming with progress, obstacles, and lots of enjoyment, I can assess what I’ve absorbed and how much I’ve evolved.

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends

One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered was forging new friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this may be one of your main concerns as well. On my inaugural day in student housing, a few days prior to the official start of term, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can say with confidence that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever known. These bonds have turned into my second family here at Imperial.

What aided me? Taking that initial step. Even if you don’t feel prepared or at ease at the beginning, don’t fret—there are numerous icebreaker events and avenues to engage with others. I also recognized the significance of being authentic. With such a diverse array of individuals within the course and university, you’re sure to find others who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Addressing the Academic Hurdles

Adapting to the course’s workload and complexity was another major challenge. The shift from A-levels to university proved tough, and the leap from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or doubt your capabilities, particularly when you observe others studying and question if you’re keeping pace.

What helped me navigate those times was the understanding that everyone is facing similar challenges. If something isn’t clear to you, it’s likely others are grappling with it too. The key lies in asking for assistance—whether from your classmates or the teaching staff. Learning to seek out help is arguably the most vital skill to cultivate during your first year.

### The Significance of Supportive Staff

Speaking of support, the personnel in the Materials department are fantastic. They genuinely wish for students to thrive and are understanding of the challenges we experience. Throughout the year, they maintained open communication with us, addressing our concerns and offering guidance.

I did not fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until later in the year, but I wish I had engaged with it sooner. At the beginning of the year, I took the initiative to become a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to foster connections with staff members, which turned out to be priceless. There are numerous ways to build relationships with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university journey. My most important lesson? Make the most of the help and resources accessible to you—you can never have an excess of support!

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on this past year, I have come to understand that the anxiety I experienced prior to and during university was often unfounded. With the vast array of support available—from staff to fellow students—assistance is always nearby. I’ve realized that I’m never truly on my own, and I’ve learned how to juggle having fun with managing the stress of exams and deadlines that are unavoidable.

As I get ready for the next phase of my academic journey, I feel thankful for the growth, friendships, and insights that my first year has provided. If you’re about to embark on your own journey, take that leap—it’s truly worthwhile.
