**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, apprehension, and uncertainty about the journey ahead. I was about to begin my experience as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and reserved, immersing myself in university life felt intimidating. Now, as I reflect on an academic year filled with personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment, I can contemplate what I’ve gained and how much I’ve progressed.

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends

One of the most daunting elements of starting university was establishing friendships. If you are a prospective student, this may also be one of your primary worries. On my first day in student housing, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life.

These connections didn’t happen overnight, but they began with modest steps—like striking up casual conversations with others who were equally new to the environment. Gradually, these acquaintances evolved into a second family here at Imperial. The most important lesson I learned? Take that leap at the beginning of the year. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be ample icebreaker events and opportunities to engage with others. Above all, just be yourself. With such a diverse array of students, you’re sure to discover individuals who share your interests and values.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Adjusting to the academic expectations of university was another significant hurdle. The transition from A-levels to university coursework was stark, and the shift between the first and second terms felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed or question your capabilities when you’re surrounded by high-achieving peers.

What helped me immensely was understanding that I wasn’t alone. Everyone was dealing with similar challenges, and if I didn’t grasp something, it’s likely others didn’t either. The key takeaway? Don’t shy away from seeking help. Whether from your classmates or teaching staff, asking for support is one of the most crucial skills to cultivate in your first year.

### Cultivating Relationships with Supportive Staff

Speaking of assistance, the staff in the Materials department have been remarkable. They truly desire for students to thrive and are compassionate regarding the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the academic year, they kept communication channels open and offered various forms of support.

Although I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support options until late in the year, I wish I had utilized it sooner. Taking on the role of a year well-being representative was one of the proactive steps I took early on, and it proved to be an excellent decision. It gave me the chance to forge relationships with staff members, which became invaluable. Whether through formal roles or casual encounters, getting acquainted with the staff is one of the best decisions you can make for yourself. My recommendation? Make the most of the resources and support systems available—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

This year has shown me that the apprehension I experienced before starting university—and even throughout the year—was often unneeded. With an abundance of support available from both staff and fellow students, I was never truly alone. I’ve learned to balance the stress of exams and deadlines with moments of joy and fun, and I’ve developed in ways I never expected.

Looking back, I can see a year rich in personal growth, new friendships, and important lessons. If you’re about to embark on your university journey, know that feeling nervous is entirely normal. Take those leaps, embrace the challenges, and don’t hesitate to ask for help. You’ll be surprised at how far you can go.
