**Reflections on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was filled with nerves, apprehension, and uncertainty about the road ahead. I was about to begin my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been quiet and introverted, jumping into this new phase felt daunting. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with growth, obstacles, and much enjoyment. But what insights did I gain, and how do I feel now?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Friend-Making

One of the most daunting obstacles I faced at the beginning of university was forming new friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, it’s likely a concern you share. On my initial day in student housing, just days before classes kicked off, I spent the whole day tucked away in my room, too anxious to venture out and make introductions.

Fast forward to now, and I can say with assurance that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships of my life. The individuals I’ve encountered—both in my program and throughout the university—have become like a second family. All it took was stepping beyond my comfort zone and initiating brief chats with others who were equally new to this environment.

What did I discover? Taking that pivotal leap at the beginning of the year proved worthwhile. If you’re not prepared or at ease immediately, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to engage with others. Most importantly, just be yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’ll undoubtedly find those who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Facing Academic Challenges

Another obstacle I faced was adapting to the academic load and the heightened difficulty of the subject matter. The transition from A-levels to university was substantial, and moving from the first term to the second was even more daunting. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed or question your abilities, particularly when observing others who appear to be managing better.

What guided me through these times was realizing that everyone was experiencing similar struggles. If you’re finding something hard to grasp, it’s likely that others are too. The crucial step is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or instructors. This was undeniably one of the most vital lessons I absorbed during my first year.

### The Encouraging Materials Department

Speaking of faculty, I can’t stress enough how exceptional the Materials Science department is. The lecturers and tutors genuinely care about our success and are incredibly understanding of the difficulties we encounter. They keep open communication throughout the year and are always ready to address any concerns we may express.

Although I didn’t leverage the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. One proactive step I did take early on was serving as a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to foster connections with staff members, which turned out to be immensely beneficial. Whether through formal roles or informal chats, familiarizing yourself with the faculty is one of the best moves you can make for yourself. My core takeaway? Make use of the available support—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on this past year, I realize that the anxiety I felt—both before commencing university and throughout the year—was often unwarranted. With the extensive support options provided by staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. I learned to balance the stress of exams and deadlines with moments filled with joy and fun.

In the end, my first year at Imperial has been a transformative journey. It has taught me the importance of stepping out of my comfort zone, seeking help when necessary, and embracing the experience with an open heart.
