**Insights from My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was brimming with anxious excitement as I readied myself to start my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). As a naturally introverted and quiet person, plunging into this fresh chapter of life seemed intimidating. Now, upon reflecting on the past academic year, I recognize a journey filled with significant personal development, hurdles, and unforgettable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Building Friendships

One of the most daunting elements of starting university was cultivating friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might resonate with your concerns as well. On my initial day in student housing, I spent hours sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to the present day, and I can wholeheartedly affirm that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships of my life.

I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, beginning from brief exchanges with individuals who were equally uncertain. The main takeaway? Make that move early. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous icebreaker activities and chances to engage with others. And above all, just be yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter those who align with your interests and principles.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Adapting to the academic expectations of university constituted another significant challenge. The leap from A-levels to university-level material was pronounced, and the transition from the first term to the subsequent one felt even more daunting. It’s easy to experience self-doubt when observing others study and questioning your capabilities.

What facilitated my adjustment was the understanding that everyone shares similar struggles. If you’re finding it difficult to grasp a concept, chances are that others are in the same situation. The most crucial skill I acquired in my first year was learning to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or faculty.

### The Encouraging Faculty

On the topic of faculty, the Materials Science department at Imperial is outstanding. The professors and support staff genuinely desire for students to thrive and demonstrate compassion towards the challenges we confront. They ensure open dialogue throughout the year and are always willing to assist.

Although I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral care available until late in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. Initially, I took a significant step by becoming a well-being representative for my year, which helped me form connections with staff. This was invaluable, and I strongly advise seeking ways to engage with faculty. Make the most of the support systems in place—you can never receive too much assistance!

### Fundamental Takeaways from My First Year

In retrospect, this year has enlightened me that many of the anxieties I harbored—both prior to and during university—were baseless. With the vast array of support from faculty and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. I’ve learned to balance the stress of exams and deadlines with moments of joy and leisure.

Ultimately, my first year has been a transformative journey. It has illustrated that venturing outside of my comfort zone, seeking help when necessary, and embracing the opportunities surrounding me can result in remarkable growth and fulfillment.
