**Musings on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Almost ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about my future. I was on the brink of beginning my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted, plunging into the bustling life of university felt daunting. However, reflecting on the past academic year, I recognize a time filled with remarkable personal development, obstacles, and innumerable joyful experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendship
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was the quest for friendship. For numerous incoming students, this stands as a major concern when beginning university, and I was no different. On my initial day in student housing, merely days prior to the start of term, I spent the whole day cloistered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet anyone.
Now, looking to the present, I can proudly state that I’ve made some of the finest friends I’ve ever known. The individuals I’ve connected with here—both in my program and throughout the university—have become like family. All it required was stepping beyond my comfort zone and initiating brief conversations with others who felt similarly isolated.
What lessons did I draw from this experience? First, it’s always beneficial to take that initial step at the beginning of the year. Even if you feel unprepared or uneasy, multiple icebreaker activities and chances to engage with others will be available. Secondly, the best approach is to remain authentic. With such a varied community of students, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major challenge was transitioning to the academic demands and heightened complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels to university was significant, and the progression from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. Maintaining confidence in this demanding environment wasn’t always straightforward, especially when it appeared that others were coping more effectively than I was.
What aided me in navigating this was the understanding that everyone was facing similar struggles. If I was confused about something, it’s likely others were too. The essential lesson was to seek assistance—be it from classmates or faculty. This became one of the most crucial insights I gained during my first year: don’t shy away from asking for help.
### The Value of Supportive Faculty
Speaking of assistance, the staff in the Materials department have been outstanding. They genuinely care about student success and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open, responding to our issues and offering direction.
I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support options available to me until the latter part of the year, and I regret not doing so earlier. At the year’s outset, I took the initiative to become a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to forge connections with faculty members, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to interact with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My primary takeaway? Make the most of the assistance and resources at your disposal—you can never have enough support!
### Wisdom Gained
Reflecting on this year, I have come to realize that the apprehension I experienced—both before starting university and throughout the year—was largely unwarranted. With the extensive array of support systems provided by both faculty and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone.
Moreover, I learned how to juggle the pressures of exams and deadlines with moments of enjoyment and fun. University life is a blend of challenges and opportunities, and embracing both is essential for maximizing the experience.
As I progress, I feel thankful for the personal growth, friendships, and insights that this first year has gifted me. To anyone on the verge of starting their own university adventure: take that leap, be true to yourself, and don’t hesitate to seek help. You can do it!
