**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with feelings of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was about to embark on my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been quite shy and reserved, plunging into such a new and unknown setting felt particularly intimidating. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize a journey filled with personal development, obstacles, and countless unforgettable experiences. But what insights have I gained from this journey, and where do I currently find myself?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Socializing
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered was forming friendships. For many incoming students, this is among the primary concerns when beginning university, and I was certainly no exception. On my initial day in student housing, just a few days prior to the start of term, I remained in my room the entire day, too anxious to venture out and meet new people.
Now, looking back, I can proudly say that I’ve forged some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family—individuals who have enriched this journey immensely. It all commenced with small actions, such as initiating conversations with others who were also new and uncertain.
What did I take away from this? Embracing that first leap of faith at the outset of the year is vital. Even if you don’t feel completely at ease, there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to engage with other students. Above all, stay true to yourself. With such a diverse assembly of individuals at university, you are sure to encounter those who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Addressing the Academic Demands
Another major challenge was adapting to the increased workload and the heightened difficulty of the material. The transition from A-levels to university-level education was significant, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more formidable. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed or question your skills when observing others studying and wondering if you’re keeping pace.
What assisted me in navigating this was the realization that everyone faces similar struggles. If you find yourself grappling with a particular concept, it’s likely that others are too. The secret is to seek help—whether from fellow students or the faculty. This became one of the most crucial lessons I learned in my first year: don’t hesitate to ask for assistance.
### Cultivating Connections with Supportive Faculty
On the subject of support, the staff in the Materials department have been exceptional. They genuinely care about student success and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they ensured consistent communication with us, addressing our worries and offering guidance.
I’ll admit that I didn’t fully leverage the available pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. Initially, I took a leap of faith by becoming a year well-being representative. This opportunity enabled me to forge connections with faculty members, which proved to be tremendously beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and doing so can greatly enhance your university experience. My suggestion? Fully access the help and resources at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance!
### Takeaways
Reflecting on my first year, I’ve realized that the apprehension I experienced—both prior to starting university and during the year—was frequently unfounded. With the broad spectrum of support available from faculty and fellow students, there is always assistance when it’s needed. I’ve learned that I’m never truly on my own, and I’ve figured out how to balance having fun with managing the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.
This year has been one of substantial growth, both academically and personally. It has taught me to embrace challenges, seek support when necessary, and treasure the friendships and connections I’ve fostered along the way.
