**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and doubt regarding the future as I geared up to commence my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a freshman. Plunging into something entirely unfamiliar wasn’t something my previously timid and reserved nature was used to. Reflecting back now, I see a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment. But what insights have I gained from this journey, and what is my current position?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most intimidating challenges I encountered at the onset of university was the quest to make friends. If you’re an incoming student reading this, it’s likely that this is one of your primary concerns as well. On my first day moving into my residence, just days before the semester started, I spent the whole day confined to my room, too frightened to venture out and meet anyone.
Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve developed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced—friends who feel like an extended family. All it took was stepping outside my comfort zone and initiating small chats with others who were experiencing the same feelings.
So, what did I discover? I realized that taking that first step is always worthwhile. If you’re not feeling prepared or at ease, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to interact with others. Most significantly, I learned to be authentic. With such a varied group of individuals at university, you are sure to find others who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Addressing the Academic Challenges
Another major challenge was adapting to the academic demands and the heightened complexity of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. Being in such a rigorous academic setting can sometimes undermine your self-assurance, especially when you observe others studying, making you feel like you’re lagging.
What aided me during those times was the realization that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If something baffles you, others likely share that struggle too. The crucial lesson is to seek assistance—this may be the most vital skill to hone in your freshman year. Whether it’s reaching out to classmates or looking for help from faculty, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance.
### Assistance from the Materials Department
On the subject of staff, the support from the Materials Science and Engineering department has been remarkable. The instructors and staff genuinely wish for students to excel and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. They maintain open lines of communication throughout the year, always prepared to address any issues.
I didn’t fully take advantage of the support available until the conclusion of the year, but I wish I had earlier. At the onset of the year, I did take one courageous step by becoming a year well-being representative. This opportunity enabled me to form connections with faculty members, which proved to be incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with your instructors and tutors, and doing so can greatly enhance your university experience. My biggest takeaway? Make the most of the support being provided—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
As I reflect on my first year, I’ve come to understand that a lot of the apprehension I experienced before entering university was unwarranted. With a wide array of support accessible from both staff and peers, there’s always someone to turn to. This year has shown me that I’m never genuinely alone and that enjoyment is possible even amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
University is a path of growth, and while the challenges may appear daunting initially, they are actually chances to learn, connect, and flourish. If I were to impart one piece of advice to new students, it would be this: take that leap, embrace the support available to you, and have faith that you will find your niche.
