**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Composed by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxious excitement as I readied myself for my new path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). Being naturally shy and reserved, taking the plunge into this fresh chapter seemed overwhelming. Yet, as I reflect on the past year, I recognize it was not only challenging but also life-changing, brimming with growth, education, and unforgettable experiences. So, what lessons has this year imparted, and what is my current position?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most daunting hurdles I encountered early on was forging friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this may resonate with you. On my first day in the student residence, merely days before classes commenced, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too anxious to step out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I’m pleased to report I’ve developed some truly remarkable friendships.

The solution? Making that first leap of courage. Initiating conversations with others who were just as apprehensive as I was became the crucial first step in creating a new family here at Imperial. If you feel unsure, don’t fret—there are numerous ice-breaking activities and ways to engage with peers. Most importantly, just be yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and ideals.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another considerable challenge was adjusting to the heightened workload and the intricacy of the course content. The shift from A-levels to university was stark, and the transition from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. It’s easy to become daunted or question your capabilities when observing others seemingly flourishing.

What assisted me was realizing I wasn’t in this alone. Everyone around was grappling with similar difficulties, and likely, if I struggled with a concept, others were too. The most important lesson I gleaned was the importance of seeking help—whether from classmates or instructors. Asking questions and seeking out support isn’t a weakness; it’s an essential part of thriving in your first year.

### The Significance of Supportive Faculty

One of the standout aspects of my journey has been the remarkable support from the Materials department staff. They genuinely care about student success and show understanding towards the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open and supplied an array of resources to help us face obstacles.

Though I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until late in the year, I wish I had accessed it sooner. Assuming the role of a year well-being representative early on enabled me to build connections with staff members, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to foster relationships with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My suggestion? Fully leverage the support systems at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

Looking back on my first year, I’ve come to understand that many of the anxieties I held—both prior to and during university—were unfounded. With the abundance of support from both faculty and peers, I realized I was never truly on my own. More importantly, I learned how to manage the pressures of examinations and deadlines while also carving out moments of joy and enjoyment.

This year has represented a path of growth, and I’m eager to discover what lies ahead as I continue my journey in Materials Science and Engineering. To anyone about to commence their own university adventure: take the plunge, welcome the challenges, and don’t hesitate to rely on the support around you.
