**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

A little under a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, fear, and uncertainty regarding what was ahead. I was about to begin my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). For someone who had always been quiet and introverted, venturing into the unknown wasn’t precisely something I was comfortable with. Now, reflecting on an academic year filled with development, obstacles, and enjoyment, I recognize how much I’ve gained and how far I’ve progressed.

### Confronting the Initial Major Challenge: Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting parts of commencing university was the task of making friends. If you are a potential student reading this, you might share similar concerns. On my first day at student accommodation, mere days before classes started, I spent the entire day tucked away in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself.

Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve made some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, both within my course and outside it. It all began with casual conversations and engaging with others who were navigating similar experiences.

What did I take away? Taking that initial step at the beginning of the year is essential. If you aren’t ready or comfortable immediately, don’t stress—there are numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, just be yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Confronting the Academic Shift
Adapting to the academic demands and challenges was another substantial obstacle. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the jump from the first term to the second term was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated and question your capabilities when you’re surrounded by high-achieving peers.

What assisted me in overcoming this was the awareness that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re finding it hard to grasp a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The key is to seek help—whether from your classmates or faculty. Learning to reach out for help is arguably the most critical skill you can cultivate in your first year.

### Compassionate Staff and Pastoral Support
On the topic of support, the faculty in the Materials department are truly remarkable. They genuinely care about student success and understand the hurdles we face. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open and displayed empathy for our challenges.

I didn’t fully tap into the available pastoral support until the year’s end, and I do wish I had explored it earlier. At the beginning of the year, I took a bold step by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This responsibility allowed me to forge strong connections with staff, which proved to be tremendously beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience.

My foremost lesson here? Utilize the resources and support that are provided to you. You can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained
This year has revealed to me that the anxiety I experienced before starting university—and even throughout the year—was often unfounded. There’s abundant support available, both from staff and peers, to assist you in navigating challenges. I’ve learned that I’m never truly alone and that it’s feasible to manage the stress of exams and deadlines while still embracing moments of joy and enjoyment.

Looking back, I can see how much I’ve evolved, both academically and personally. Starting university might seem intimidating, but it’s also an incredible chance to learn, bond, and flourish.
