**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was immersed in a mix of nerves, anxiety, and uncertainty as I prepared to start my journey as a freshman in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). Having always been a bit reserved, plunging into this new phase felt quite daunting. Now, as I look back on the past academic year, I recognize a time of significant growth, challenges, and memorable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what’s my current perspective?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

A major source of anxiety when starting university was the idea of forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might resonate with you as a key concern as well. I recall my initial day in the student residence—just a few days ahead of the semester. I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others.

Now, reflecting on this moment, I can wholeheartedly say I’ve formed some of the most wonderful friendships I could hope for. These bonds have become my second family here at Imperial, originating from simple conversations and shared experiences.

What did I take away from this? It’s essential to take that first step. If you don’t feel ready or comfortable initially, that’s completely normal—there will be numerous ice-breaking events and chances to meet new people. Above all, be true to yourself. With a diverse array of individuals across the program and campus, you are sure to encounter those who align with your interests and principles.

### Addressing the Academic Hurdles

Adapting to the demands and complexity of university-level academics proved to be another primary challenge. The transition from A-levels to university was marked, and the shift from the first term to the second felt particularly taxing. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities, especially when witnessing others engaging in their studies and fearing you might be falling behind.

What proved most beneficial for me was the understanding that everyone shares similar challenges. If you find yourself struggling to grasp a concept, there’s a good chance that others are as well. The vital factor is to reach out for assistance—whether from your classmates or instructors. Developing the habit of asking for help might be the most crucial skill you cultivate in your first year.

### The Value of Support and Community

Speaking of instructors, the Materials Science department at Imperial is exceptional. The lecturers and tutors genuinely care about students’ success and are understanding of the obstacles we encounter. They uphold open lines of communication throughout the year, ensuring that students feel supported.

I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral care provided until late in the year, and I now realize I should have engaged with it earlier. At the semester’s beginning, I bravely took on the role of a year well-being representative. This opportunity allowed me to forge connections with staff, which turned out to be immensely beneficial. There are various ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university journey. My key lesson? Make the most of the support systems available to you—you can never have too much assistance!

### Reflections

In retrospect, this year has illustrated that the apprehension I felt—both leading up to starting university and throughout the year—was often unfounded. With the extensive support options offered by staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely isolated.

This year also taught me how to manage the stress associated with exams and deadlines while still embracing moments of happiness and enjoyment. It has been a transformative experience, and I am thankful for the growth and memories I have accumulated along the way.

If you’re poised to begin your own university journey, keep this in mind: take that leap, seek help when needed, and seize the opportunities before you. You can do it!
