**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was enveloped in a mix of anxious anticipation, uncertainty, and self-doubt as I set out to start my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a freshman. As a person who had always been introverted and cautious, diving headfirst into the complexities of university life felt quite intimidating. Now, as I look back on the past academic year, I view it as a journey of personal development, obstacles, and numerous joyful moments. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself now?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered at the onset of university was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this could be one of your primary worries as well. On my first day arriving at student housing—just days prior to the semester kicking off—I spent the whole day confined to my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to the present, and I’m pleased to say that I’ve forged some of the closest friendships I’ve ever known.

The pivotal moment arrived when I opted to take incremental steps, such as initiating dialogues with individuals who were similarly situated. In due course, I discovered a second family here at Imperial. My most significant lesson? Take that initial leap of faith without delay. Even if you feel unprepared, numerous icebreaker activities and events designed to facilitate connections will be available. Above all, simply be yourself. With a richly diverse community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who share your passions and principles.

### Addressing the Academic Demands
Another considerable challenge was acclimating to the workload and the heightened difficulty of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s all too easy to feel overwhelmed or question your capabilities when you observe others studying and appearing to have everything sorted out.

What benefited me was acknowledging that we are all navigating similar experiences. If you find yourself struggling with a concept, it’s likely that others are facing similar challenges. The essential element is to seek help—whether from your fellow students or the faculty. Learning to request assistance could be the most vital skill you acquire in your first year.

### Cultivating Relationships with Faculty
Speaking of assistance, the faculty in the Materials department have been remarkable. They genuinely aspire for students to excel and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept communication open and were consistently willing to address our queries.

Even though I didn’t make the most of the pastoral support options until the end of the year, I wish I had availed myself of them sooner. One of the finest choices I made was to become a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to foster connections with faculty members, which turned out to be invaluable. Engaging with staff—whether via formal roles or casual encounters—is among the best actions you can take for yourself. My recommendation? Fully utilize the available support and resources—you can never receive too much help!

### Insights Gained
Reflecting on this past year, I’ve come to realize that the anxiety I experienced—both prior to commencing university and throughout the year—was often unwarranted. With the extensive support systems in place from both faculty and peers, I was never genuinely alone. I’ve discovered how to manage the stress from exams and deadlines while also enjoying moments of leisure and fun.

Ultimately, my first year at Imperial has been a transformative journey. It has been a year of growth, challenges, and unforgettable experiences. If you are about to begin a similar path, remember that it’s perfectly normal to feel apprehensive—but also understand that you will possess all the tools needed to excel.
