**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Written by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding my future. I was about to start my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and reserved, plunging into this new phase felt intimidating. Now, as I reflect on an academic year rich with personal growth, obstacles, and memorable experiences, I recognize how much I’ve developed and how far I’ve progressed.

### Conquering the Anxiety of Friend-Making

One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered early on was forging friendships. For numerous incoming students, this is among the largest concerns about entering university, and I was no different. On my first day settling into my accommodation—just a few days before term officially kicked off—I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself.

Fast forward to now, and I’m thrilled to report that I’ve developed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. The individuals I’ve encountered here—both in my program and throughout the university—have become like a second family. These bonds began with something as straightforward as casual conversations with others who were just as apprehensive as me.

What did I take away from this experience? I learned that making an effort at the beginning of the year is worthwhile. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret—there are numerous icebreaker activities and chances to connect with others. Most crucially, I realized that authenticity is essential. With such a rich diversity of individuals at Imperial, you’re sure to find others who resonate with your interests and values.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another obstacle I faced was adapting to the heavy workload and increased complexity of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university was profound, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more demanding. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed or doubt your abilities when observing others who appear to be studying and thriving.

What aided me in overcoming these periods of insecurity was the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re struggling with a concept, it’s likely that others are, too. The most beneficial action you can take is to seek assistance—whether from peers or faculty. Learning to seek help is probably the most crucial skill I honed during my initial year.

### Assistance from the Materials Department

Speaking of support, the staff in the Materials Science and Engineering department are phenomenal. They genuinely care about students’ success and are sympathetic to the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept open lines of communication with us, addressing our worries and providing guidance.

Although I didn’t fully utilize the support systems available until the year’s end, I wish I had taken advantage of them earlier. One of the proactive steps I took early on was to become a year well-being representative, which allowed me to establish connections with staff members. This experience proved to be incredibly advantageous, and I’d recommend anyone to seize opportunities to engage with their lecturers and tutors. The support they provide exists for a purpose—don’t hesitate to utilize it!

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to realize that many of the anxious feelings I experienced—both before commencing university and throughout the year—were unnecessary. With the broad spectrum of support available from staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. This year has taught me how to juggle the pressures of exams and deadlines alongside moments of happiness and personal growth.

To anyone preparing to embark on their university adventure, my advice is straightforward: take the plunge, be true to yourself, and don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. You’ll be astonished at the amount of growth you can experience in merely one year.
