**Insights from My First Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about my future. I was on the brink of commencing my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a first-year student at Imperial College London. For someone who used to be introverted, jumping into this new phase felt quite intimidating. Reflecting back, I recognize a year that was life-changing—filled with personal growth, challenges, and memorable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and where am I now?

### Conquering the Fear of Friendship

One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered at the beginning was forming friendships. This is a common concern for many incoming students, and I wasn’t an exception. On my first day settling into student housing, just prior to the start of term, I hid in my room the whole day, too anxious to venture out and meet new people.

Now, I can proudly declare that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I could ever hope for. These relationships have grown into a second family for me, encompassing both my course and the wider university community. It all commenced with casual conversations and connecting with individuals who felt as nervous as I did.

What lesson did I take from this experience? Taking that first step is always beneficial. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be numerous ice-breaker events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, I discovered the value of simply being myself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you are sure to encounter people who resonate with your interests and values.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another major challenge was adjusting to the demanding workload and the heightened complexity of the subjects. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the progression from the first term to the second felt even more substantial. It’s natural to feel overwhelmed or question your capabilities when observing others study and wondering if you match their pace.

What assisted me during this transition was acknowledging that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The crucial lesson here is to seek assistance—whether from your classmates or teaching personnel. This stands out as the most vital takeaway from my first year: don’t hesitate to request help.

### Assistance from the Faculty

On the topic of support, the faculty in the Materials department have been phenomenal. They truly care about student success and understand the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they ensured open lines of communication and offered various types of aid.

I did not fully engage with the pastoral support available until later in the year, and I regret not doing so sooner. At the beginning of the year, I took a step forward by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position helped me foster relationships with staff members, which proved to be incredibly beneficial. Through both formal roles and casual conversations, getting acquainted with the staff is one of the most valuable things you can do for yourself. My main takeaway? Utilize the support structures at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance.

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to understand that much of the anxiety I experienced prior to starting university was unwarranted. With the extensive support offered by both staff and fellow students, I was never truly on my own. This year has equipped me to manage the stress from exams and deadlines while also cherishing joyful moments.

Looking forward, I feel increasingly assured and ready for the future. If I could share one piece of advice with new students, it would be this: welcome the challenges, take bold steps, and never hesitate to seek assistance. You’ll be surprised at the growth you can achieve in just one year.
