**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I set out on a path that was both thrilling and intimidating: commencing my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a first-year student. During that time, I was overwhelmed with feelings of anxiety, insecurity, and uncertainty about what the future held. Venturing into the unknown was not something my shy and introverted nature was familiar with. Now, as I reflect on an academic year brimming with personal growth, obstacles, and immense enjoyment, I feel compelled to contemplate the lessons I’ve gained and the progress I’ve made.

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most fearsome challenges I encountered was the task of making friends. For countless incoming students, this stands as one of the primary concerns about starting university, and I was no different. On my first day in student housing, right before the term kicked off, I spent the entirety of the day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself to others.

Fast forward to today, and I can proudly state that I’ve established some of the finest friendships of my life. These bonds, created with fellow students from my course and beyond, have transformed into a second family for me. All it required was stepping beyond my comfort zone and initiating small talks with others who shared similar feelings.

So, what insights did I gain? I discovered that taking that first step at the beginning of the year always pays off. If you feel hesitant or uneasy, fret not—there will be ample icebreaker activities and chances to connect with others. Above all, I learned that remaining true to yourself is essential. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you are bound to meet individuals who reflect your interests and values.

### Navigating Academic Obstacles

Another significant challenge I faced was adjusting to the academic workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was substantial, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pressing. It’s easy to become overwhelmed and doubt your capabilities when surrounded by peers who appear to have it all under control.

What aided me during these tough times was the understanding that everyone is navigating the same experience. If you’re having trouble grasping a concept, it’s likely that others are as well. The best course of action is to ask for assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. Learning to reach out for help could be the most crucial skill to cultivate in your first year.

### The Value of Community and Support

Speaking of assistance, the faculty in the Materials department have been exceptional. They earnestly wish for students to thrive and are sympathetic to the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they ensured open lines of communication and offered a variety of support options.

While I didn’t fully take advantage of this support until later in the year, I wish I’d done so earlier. One of the best choices I made was to become a well-being representative for my year. This position allowed me to forge connections with staff members, which proved to be invaluable. Whether through formal roles or informal interactions, getting acquainted with the faculty is among the most beneficial actions you can undertake for yourself.

My most significant lesson? Make the most of the resources and support systems available to you. You can never have too much help!

### Insights for the Future

Reflecting on my first year, I’ve realized that much of the anxiety I experienced—both prior to starting university and throughout the year—was frequently unfounded. With the extensive support provided by staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. This year has equipped me with the skills to manage the stress of exams and deadlines while still embracing moments of happiness and enjoyment.

As I progress further in my studies, I am thankful for the growth I’ve undergone and look forward to what lies ahead. To anyone preparing to embark on their university journey: take the plunge, seek help when needed, and most importantly, be yourself.
