**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Almost ten months ago, in October 2022, I was engulfed in feelings of anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was on the brink of starting my venture as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had consistently been introverted and cautious, stepping into the unfamiliar was well outside my comfort zone. Now, as I reflect on an academic year filled with development, obstacles, and memorable experiences, I recognize just how much I’ve gained and the distance I’ve traveled.
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most daunting tasks I encountered was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you might share similar concerns. On my first day in student housing, just before the official start of the term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly affirm that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had.
The pivotal moment occurred when I opted to take a slight leap of faith and initiate discussions with others who were experiencing the same situation. Gradually, those initial casual conversations flourished into significant friendships, leading me to find a second family here at Imperial.
What have I taken away from this? Firstly, it’s worthwhile to take that initial leap, even when it feels intimidating. If you’re not quite ready at the outset, don’t be concerned—there are numerous icebreaker activities and chances to connect with peers. Secondly, simply be yourself. With such a varied community present at university, you’re certain to encounter individuals who resonate with you.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Adapting to the academic rigors of university was another considerable challenge. The transition from A-levels to university-level studies was profound, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more daunting. It’s easy to become overwhelmed and doubt your abilities when observing others studying and appearing to excel.
What assisted me in handling this was the understanding that everyone faces similar struggles. If you’re grappling with a concept, chances are other students are as well. The key is to seek out assistance—whether from your classmates or the faculty. Developing the skill to ask for support is perhaps the most crucial thing you can learn in your first year.
### The Significance of Supportive Faculty
On the topic of support, the faculty in the Materials department have been remarkable. They genuinely care about students’ success and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept communication lines open and were always prepared to address our issues.
Though I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until the latter part of the year, I wish I had done so earlier. Taking on the role of a year well-being representative was one of the significant steps I took at the beginning of the year, and it proved to be a fulfilling experience. It enabled me to form solid connections with staff members, which became invaluable.
My recommendation? Utilize the resources and support provided to you. Whether it’s academic assistance or pastoral support, there’s no such thing as too much help.
### Insights Gained
Reflecting back, this year has imparted a wealth of knowledge. It has revealed to me that the apprehension I experienced—both prior to commencing university and throughout the year—was often without basis. With the aid of staff and fellow students, those worries became more manageable. I’ve come to understand that I’m never entirely on my own and that it’s indeed possible to experience joy even within the pressures of exams and deadlines.
As I progress, I remain thankful for the challenges, development, and friendships that have characterized my first year. To anyone about to embark on their own university adventure: take the plunge, embrace the support surrounding you, and have confidence that you will find your niche.
