**Thoughts on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, during October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and doubt regarding the future. I was on the brink of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and cautious, plunging into the deep end was certainly outside my comfort zone. Reflecting back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and memorable experiences. So, what insights did this pivotal year provide, and where do I find myself today?

### Conquering the Fear of Socializing

One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered at the onset of university was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student perusing this, you might share the same feelings of anxiety. On my first day in student housing, a few days prior to the official start of term, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too fearful to go out and meet others.

Flash forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the best friendships of my life. The individuals I’ve met have truly become my second family, across both my program and the broader university community. It simply required me to step beyond my comfort zone and engage in casual conversations with fellow students who were also seeking connections.

What have I gleaned from this experience? Taking that first step at the beginning of the year is vital. If you’re not ready or don’t feel comfortable immediately, that’s okay—there are numerous icebreaker events and chances to bond with others. Most importantly, I learned to embrace my authentic self. With a diverse student body, you’re likely to find peers who resonate with your interests and values.

### Addressing Academic Hurdles

Another major challenge was acclimating to the university’s workload and the complexity of the subjects. The transition from A-levels to university was marked, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel swamped or question your capabilities when observing others study and assume they have everything under control.

What supported me through this was the understanding that everyone is facing similar struggles. If you find yourself grappling with a concept, chances are others are too. Learning to seek assistance became one of the most valuable skills I honed during my first year. Whether it’s reaching out to classmates or asking for help from faculty, don’t shy away from inquiring—it truly makes a difference.

### Assistance from Faculty

On the topic of faculty, the Materials Science department at Imperial is outstanding. The professors and support personnel genuinely care about student success and empathize with the obstacles we encounter. They maintain open lines of communication with students throughout the academic year, addressing any challenges we face.

Even though I didn’t fully engage with the available pastoral support until late in the year, I now wish I had taken advantage of it much earlier. Early in the year, I made a decision to become a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which proved invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and I highly recommend leveraging these opportunities. My key takeaway? Don’t hesitate to utilize the support systems at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance!

### Key Takeaways

Reflecting on this year, I’ve realized that the nervousness I experienced—both prior to starting university and throughout the year—was often unfounded. There is an abundance of support, whether from faculty or fellow students, to assist you through any hurdles. I’ve discovered that I’m never truly isolated, and I’ve learned to manage the stress of examinations and deadlines while also savoring joyful moments and fun experiences.

As I think back on my first year, I feel grateful for the growth, the friendships, and the lessons I’ve acquired. To anyone preparing to begin their university experience: take the plunge, be authentic, and don’t hesitate to seek help. You’ve got this!
