**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about the future. I was about to begin my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been timid and introverted, taking such a significant step in life felt intimidating. Now, after reflecting on a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment, I can assert that it has been a remarkable journey. But what insights have I garnered, and what is my status now?

### Navigating the Challenge of Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting parts of beginning university was the prospect of making friends. If you’re a future student perusing this, you’re likely concerned about this too. On my first day settling into my accommodation, just days before the semester commenced, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet new people. Fast forward to today, I can proudly assert that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, initiated by brief conversations with fellow students who were equally apprehensive.

So, what did I take away from this? Taking that first step of faith at the beginning of the year is essential. If you’re uneasy or not ready, that’s completely normal! There are numerous icebreaker events and opportunities designed to help you connect with others. Most importantly, be authentic. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

### Confronting the Academic Shift

Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the complexity of the curriculum. The leap from A-levels to university was palpable, and the transition from the first term to the second felt even more daunting. It’s easy to feel inundated and doubt your competencies when surrounded by ambitious peers. However, one thing that aided me was the realization that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you find yourself struggling with a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The crucial part is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. Learning to ask for help is arguably the most beneficial skill you can cultivate during your first year.

### The Value of Support and Community

Speaking of assistance, the staff in the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely care about student success and empathize with the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the academic year, they maintained open lines of communication with us, addressing our issues and providing guidance. Although I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support offered until the end of the year, I wish I had accessed it sooner.

At the beginning of the year, I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to forge connections with staff members, which turned out to be immensely valuable. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway? Make the most of the available support systems—there’s always room for more help!

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on this past year, I’ve come to realize that much of the anxiety I experienced before and during university was unwarranted. With the array of support options provided by both staff and peers, there’s always someone available to assist. This year has taught me that I’m never truly alone and that it’s feasible to juggle the pressures of exams and deadlines while still enjoying moments of joy and fun.

As I progress, I’m thankful for the challenges, friendships, and personal growth I’ve encountered. To anyone on the verge of starting their university experience: take the plunge, welcome the support surrounding you, and most importantly, relish the journey.
