**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the journey ahead. I was about to start my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and somewhat quiet, stepping into the unfamiliar was quite intimidating. Looking back now, I see a year full of personal development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable experiences. But what have I learned this year, and what is my current perspective?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Building Friendships

One of the most daunting challenges I encountered was forming new friendships. If you are a potential student reading this, you might have similar concerns. On my very first day in student housing, just days before classes commenced, I spent all day in my room, too anxious to go out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve made some of the finest friends I could ask for—friends who feel like family.

What shifted? It all began with simple conversations. I came to understand that everyone was experiencing the same feelings of anxiety and uncertainty. Taking that first step to reach out to others made a significant impact. If you feel unsure, don’t fret—there will be plenty of icebreaker activities and opportunities to meet new people. And remember, just be yourself. With such a wide array of students at Imperial, you are sure to find those who align with your interests and principles.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another major challenge was adapting to the increased workload and the complexity of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university was quite stark, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more difficult. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities when observing others studying and apparently thriving.

What assisted me was a straightforward reminder: everyone is facing similar challenges. If you don’t grasp something, it’s likely that others are having the same difficulty. The essential thing is to seek assistance—be it from your classmates or faculty members. This is perhaps the most crucial lesson I gained in my first year: don’t be afraid to ask for help when necessary.

### Establishing Relationships with Faculty

Speaking of assistance, the faculty in the Materials department are remarkable. They truly desire for students to flourish and understand the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept communication lines open, addressing our worries and providing direction.

Though I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until later in the year, I wish I had engaged with it sooner. Stepping into the role of a year well-being representative was a leap of faith for me, but it turned out to be one of my best choices. It allowed me to cultivate relationships with faculty members, which were incredibly valuable. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and I highly encourage you to leverage them. The support they can offer can significantly enhance your experience.

### Key Takeaways

Reflecting on my first year, I’ve realized that the anxiety I experienced—both before starting university and throughout the year—was often unnecessary. With the abundance of support from faculty and fellow students, there’s always someone available to assist you. I’ve recognized that I’m never genuinely alone, and I’ve learned how to balance enjoying myself while managing the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.

This year has been one of significant personal growth, and I look forward to what the future holds as I continue my journey in Materials Science and Engineering.
