**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was brimming with anxiety, apprehension, and self-doubt as I geared up to embark on my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). As someone who had always been timid and reserved, stepping into the unknown was certainly outside my comfort zone. However, reflecting on this academic year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, challenges, and unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself now?
### Taking the Plunge: Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting obstacles at the start of university was forging new friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this could be your chief concern as well. On my first day at my student residence, just days before classes officially kicked off, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet new people. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve cultivated some of the finest friendships of my life—friends who truly feel like family.
How did this transformation occur? It all began with light conversations and connecting with fellow students in similar situations. My key takeaway? Make that leap early on. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous icebreaker activities and chances to engage with others. Most importantly, just be yourself. With a plethora of diverse individuals at university, you will certainly encounter people who align with your interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major challenge was adapting to the academic workload and heightened complexity of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more demanding. It’s easy to become overwhelmed and doubt your capabilities, particularly when observing others studying diligently and seemingly thriving.
What helped me navigate this was the realization that everyone experiences similar struggles. If you’re finding something difficult to grasp, others likely are too. The essential skill to cultivate in your first year is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty members.
### Support from Faculty
Speaking of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial College London has been absolutely remarkable. They genuinely care about students’ success and understand the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they offered open lines of communication and unwavering support.
While I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until the year’s end, I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. Early on, I made the decision to become a year well-being representative, which allowed me to establish connections with faculty members. This turned out to be an invaluable opportunity. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can greatly enhance your university experience. My recommendation? Fully leverage the available support—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
This year has taught me that the anxieties and uncertainties I felt prior to starting university were mostly unfounded. With the plethora of support offered by both faculty and fellow students, I’ve realized that I’m never truly alone. More significantly, I’ve learned how to navigate the pressures of exams and deadlines while also relishing moments of joy and fun.
Looking back, I see a year characterized by growth, resilience, and unforgettable experiences. For anyone about to set out on their own university adventure, my advice is straightforward: take the plunge, seek assistance, and seize every opportunity for growth.
